Studio passes were given to press and industry representatives allowing the bearer access to the studio’s lot and sets. It reads in full: “Republic Press Pass April 1st to crossed out Dec. 31 1945 Republic Studios To Publicity Department Only Name Jimmy Starr typed Publication L.A. Herald Express typed Violations of the Requirements of this Pass Will Result in Its Permanent Cancellation. No. 23 Director of Studio Publicity signed This Pass Not Valid Unless Signed by Holder on Reverse Side.†On the verso is a printed set of basic terms regarding the holder of the pass without Mr. Starr’s signature. About fine with the most minute trace of use. Jimmy Starr 1902 - 1990 is best known as a Hollywood columnist though he was also a writer and actor known for The Corpse Came C.O.D. 1947 A Night for Crime 1943 and Pink Pajamas 1929. Republic Pictures specialized in Westerns and movie serials and was notable for developing the careers of John Wayne Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Some of the 1945 Republic Pictures films for the time period Mr. Starr may have enjoyed include such popular productions as The Vampire’s Ghost with John Abbot and Peggy Stewart Flame of Barbary Coast with John Wayne and Ann Dvorak The Chicago Kid with Donald Barry and Otto Kruger Tell It To a Star with Ruth Taylor and Robert Livingston Scotland Yard Investigator with Sir Aubrey Smith and Erich von Stroheim and Dakota with John Wayne and Vera Ralston. Accompanying the exhibition list also probably produced on a photocopier is a two-page Press Release dated November 14 1968 and issued by Eleanor Haas on behalf of the Studio Museum. titled. Both items are printed on one side and stapled in upper left corners. 28 cm. The exhibition was organized by Henri Ghent director of the Brooklyn Museum's Community. 42 works by 21 African American artists are listed as included in the exhibition. The Press Release is titled "Blacks Talk Back to the Whitney Museum and states in part: The Whitney Museum left them out. Not a single black artist is inclued in its current survey of American art of the 1930's . "Our title of course refers to Ralph Ellison's superb image for the exclusion of blacks from consciousness by the white establishment" said Mr. Ghent . "They refuse to see us.
