19303711Fairmont West Virginia: Houston Studio 1930. First Edition. Very good. One albumen print photograph with thin black border about 10" x 8" backed onto linen. In very good condition with some creases nicks and very minor discoloration at the extremities but generally preserved. The photograph is somewhat mysterious depicting a group of fourteen young boys and girls another nine who are a few years older and two male adults. In front of the group are four briefcases. As best we can tell these are labeled "Miner's First Aid Cabinet" and the logo appears to be that of the Mine Safety Appliances Company. Perhaps these were young miners and first aid nurses in training or maybe it was a summer camp. Regardless a nicely sized image which captures youth life in coal country during the height of the coal boom in early 20th century America. Houston Studio unknown
1930I7D9LIPN5PS6London 1930. In a wooden frame ca. 53 x 64 cm under glass. Matt silver print ca. 28 x 36 cm watercolour pastel gouache and oil paint. Mounted on paper in a passe-partout. Signed "Lafayette" in pencil on the mount. Impressively coloured photographic portrait of the Saudi crown prince Saud 1902-1969 by the eminent London photographic studio Lafayette. Prince Saud the future King Saud of Saudi Arabia had been appointed crown prince in 1933 and fought in the 1934 war against Yemen. After the war his father encouraged him to travel abroad and over the next few years he visited Saudi-Arabia's neighbours Europe and the United States. While in London Prince Saud had his portrait taken by the Lafayette studio originally established in Dublin in 1880. It is no coincidence that Prince Saud chose a firm that had photographed numerous emperors kings sultans earls early movie stars etc. The firm would also provide hand coloured prints on request and the current photograph is an example of the very high quality they provided. The photograph of Prince Saud was coloured by painting over the photograph with watercolours and pastel. A subsequent treatment made it possible to use tiny drops of oil paint to highlight the gold trimming on his robe the jewels and pearls on his sword and the small lights in his eyes. In very good condition with only very minor craquelure. A colour portrait of the future King Saud of Arabia: a photograph enhanced by an expert painter from the leading British firm for the genre.l For Lafayette: Russell Harris Narrated in calm prose. unknown

Two original vintage silver-gelatin studio portraits ca 5-3/8" x 3-1/2"; printed to borders with embossed edges; printed for postal use on verso with divided backs for addressing. Slight crease to one corner but both images very well-preserved Near Fine. Embossed studio stamp in image lower right: "Lucerne / Studio / 1437 Fillmore Street / S.F. Cal." <br /> <br /> Also included are slightly larger proof versions of the same two images on thinner photographic paper each with abrasions at center of image with evidence of scrapbook adhesion to versos; Good only. <br /> <br /> The first image is of two young female sitters posing arms encircling each other's backs dressed in identical Pierrot costumes -- possibly attired for a costume ball. The second image is a solo portrait of one of the same two sitters. Undated; sitters unidentified but this studio appears to have been active in the period 1909-1911. An advertisement offering Lucerne Studio for sale appears in the February 1912 issue of Camera Craft a San Francisco photographic trade journal. Original silver gelatin photograph panoramic format measuring 13" x 7.25" mounted on its original heavy card mat to an overall size of 14" x 17". Bears the imprint of the prominent Winnipeg firm "Gauvin Gentzel Studio" to the upper left. A printed caption below the image identifies the "Manitoba Legislative Assembly 1947" and lists all members by row along with the Speaker and legislative staff. <br /> <br />A crisp and detailed panoramic photograph capturing the 22nd Manitoba Legislature in session. The image provides a rare wide-angle view of the historic chamber with all members present at their desks. This 1947 assembly is a fascinating snapshot of Manitoba's unique "Coalition" era. The government led by Premier Stuart S. Garson K.C. pictured in the 3rd row was a fusion of Liberal-Progressives and Progressive Conservatives a "non-partisan" administration that had its origins in the war years. <br /> <br />The photograph is a roster of Manitoba's post-war political establishment. In addition to Premier Garson who would leave in 1948 to join the federal cabinet the roster includes his successor Hon. Douglas L. Campbell 3rd Row who would go on to be Premier for a decade. Also present are numerous other cabinet ministers and future luminaries including: Hon. J. S. McDiarmid 3rd Row who would be appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba in 1953; Lt.-Col. Gordon Churchill 1st Row a future federal MP and prominent cabinet minister in the Diefenbaker government; Gunnar S. Thorvaldson K.C. 2nd Row a future Senator. <br /> <br />Most remarkably this image captures the legislature's sole dissenter and one of its most notable figures: William "Bill" A. Kardash 2nd Row. As the only member of the Labor-Progressive Party Communist in the assembly Kardash was a conspicuous and often isolated voice in the coalition-dominated house. His presence seated amongst the very establishment he ideologically opposed is a powerful visual representation of the era's complex political landscape at the dawn of the Cold War. <br /> <br />The photograph itself is a fine example of the large-format group portraiture perfected by the Gauvin Gentzel Studio one of Winnipeg's leading photographic firms for decades known for their clarity and high-quality compositions. The silver gelatin print retains excellent clarity sharp detail and strong contrast. The mat is clean and bright with only very light toning to the edges and minor bumping to the corners. 19207923Thomaston GA: Trice - photographer 1920. Very good . One photograph measuring about 9.5" x 7.5" housed in a contemporary mat and somewhat later frame. The photograph is in excellent condition though it has come slightly loosened from the mat. We have not endeavored to open the back of the frame to either fix or examine it. In the center of the image is a large passenger railcar with the locomotive in the background if any identifying markings are present we cannot read them. Posing in front is a group of nearly two dozen businessmen in suits all posing next to a sign reading "Goodrich Silvertowns" which were a popular white wall tire during the 1910s and 1920s which would seem to date this photograph. The photograph is credited on the bottom right corner to Trice Studio in Thomaston GA which is likely the general area in which the photograph was taken. Though slightly mysterious a nicely-sized photograph of a train taken in the rural south. [Trice - photographer] unknown

Autograph and photograph collection album includes tipped in silver gelatin photographs. The inscriptions and autographs are on sepia toned gelatin prints photographs; inscriptions from the performers to Rita Olcott. Inscription and autographs including cast: Thomas A. Wise Lola Fisher James T. Powers Fred Eric Chauncey Olcott Percival Vivian May Collins George Tawde Walter Woodall and "Sir Anthony Absolute" dated December 25 1924. "The Rivals comedy in five acts by Richard Brinsley Sheridan produced and published in 1775. The original play stars Sir Anthony Absolute fictional character the father of Captain Jack Absolute and with him a protagonist of Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comic play The Rivals 1775. Sir Anthony is a wealthy aristocrat and so his son masquerades as the penniless Ensign Beverley in order to court Lydia Languish who has romantic notions of marrying a poor man. When Sir Anthony attempts on his own to arrange a marriage between Jack and Lydia Jack's true identity is revealed to Lydia. She initially rejects him because of his deceit but she eventually accepts him." On October 30 1925 while playing the role of Sir Lucius O'Trigger in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The Rivals Olcott fell ill and wasn't expected to survive. He eventually recovered but it was the last time he appeared on stage. Almost seven years later Chauncey finally succumbed to his chronic bout with pernicious anemia at his Monaco villa in the early hours of March 18 1932. In 1897 Chauncey married Rita O'Donovan from San Francisco a fellow enthusiast. They collaborated on many plays she was the inspiration for the song that Chauncey wrote "My Wild Irish Rose." She wrote a biography "Song in Her Heart" about her and Chauncey's life which was made into a film "My Wild Irish Rose." Wonderful example of an early 20th century performers dedication album. A handsome volume and still one of the most approachable gateways into the field. 8 large colour plates images measuring 15 x 22 cms approx each with tissue guards and 6 pages of explanatory text. Some foxing to the paper throughout but not to the printed images though their surrounds are foxed. Printed boards covered in Japanese style paper. The spine is firm and without loss.
