191610427Missouri: Hixon-Connelly Studio 1916. Photograph. Good. 8" x 10" Platinum/Palladium process photographic print of Kate Morgan signed Hixon-Connelly in white. A stunning photograph with rich deep tones and exceptionally high brights. The Hixon-Connelly partnership yielded a bevy of Vaudeville and theatre subjects. Highlights included Valeska Suratt for Fox and Ruth St. Denis in Theatre Magazine. At one time with four branch studios as well as primary in Kansas City. Known for dark half shaded intense prints keen on dramatic negative manipulation yielding profound shadow expression and drama in an era of still repose popularized in portraiture. 'Kate Morgan with Wallis Clark' written in pencil to rear uncredited actors in Frank Capras It Happened One Night. Small loss lower left corner. Hixon-Connelly Studio unknown
1930158866New York: Vandamm Studio 1930. Vintage portrait photograph of actor Otto Kruger by the photography team of Florence and Tommy Vandamm Vandamm Studio circa 1930. Photograph with a blind "Vandamm / New York" stamp on the bottom left of the recto and a "Vandamm Studio" stamp on the verso and a label on the verso announcing Kruger in the leading role of the Broadway play "The Boundary Line" by playwright Dana Burnet which premiered at the 48th Street Theatre on February 5 1930 and ran for 37 performances closing in March 1930. The photograph was likely commissioned by the Theatre Guild which contracted Vandamm Studios to photograph all of their productions beginning in 1928.

Kruger began his career as a Broadway matinee idol in the 1920s and 1930s before establishing a niche in feature films as the charming villain such as in Alfred Hitchcock's 1942 film "Saboteur" Joseph M. Newman's "711 Ocean Drive" and Douglas Sirk's 1954 film "Magnificent Obsession." Kruger starred in over 80 films between 1915 and 1964 as well as multiple television appearances in the 1950s and 1960s.

The husband and wife photography team of Florence and Tommy Vandamm married in 1918 emigrated from London to New York in the 1920s due to declining business in their portrait studio following World War I. By 1928 Vandamm Studio began to dominate the field in New York after being contracted by the Theatre Guild to photograph all of their productions. Florence took responsibility for most of the portrait work while Tommy documented the stage work. The studio was closed by Florence in 1961. Vandamm Studio's work was known for their carefully planned lighting and composition and their attention to detail.

8 x 10 inches. Very Good with two vertical folds and three horizontal folds cropping the face. Vandamm Studio unknown
197016443JCulver City: Metro-Golwyn-Mayer Studios 1970s. The original "Myrna Loy Building" metal sign from the M.G.M. Hollywood Studio lot. In the 1970s the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio started naming various buildings after their classic film stars. Myrna Loy was alive and well at the time of the naming of her building. This sign was acquired by a gentleman who worked as a carpenter on the lot for many years. His accompanying letter reads: During the middle 1980's 85 to 89 I Michael McGovern worked at the old M.G.M. lot Studios in Culver City California in the Permanent Construction Dept. The lot was sold several times in this time frame. At one point before the now Sony Studios it was owned and named Lorimar Telepictues. When the lot was Lorimar Telepictures they were painting and changing the M.G.M. lot to the new Lorimar "look." Thus the signs Blue and Gold naming the building after the old M.G.M. stars were taken down and replaced with the new signs brown and white that matched the Lorimar colors. I asked my boss if it was OK to keep the signs I changed and he said it was fine with him. Myrna Loy is best known for her portrayal of "Nora Charles" in six Thin Man films with William Powell of the 1930s but also starred in Manhattan Melodrama Libeled Lady Test Pilot The Best Years of our Lives Cheaper by the Dozen and From the Terrace. Her film career spanned more than 50 years Accompanied by a copy of Mr. McGovern's "Prop Maker" ID card. The sign measures 18 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and presents with some obvious wear from the elements like extremely small areas of rust and signs of use overall in excellent condition. Today the studio lot is owned by Sony and it houses both Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Myrna Loy Building which was the old MGM sound department exists and it still proudly bears her name. 57778no date circa 1940s. Children's Adventure Artwork ORIGINAL PAINTING 38 x 57cm. Gouache painted directly onto a Winsor & Newton Fashion-Plate Drawing Board details printed on reverse. A little rubbed chipped and bumped to edges but clean and bright generally. Very good. An original painting produced by Leslie Stead or one of the members of 'Studio Stead' believed for a Biggles title but apparently never published. Winsor and Newton's art supplies factory in Wealdstone Middlesex opened in 1937 providing a terminus post quem. The style of their advertisement on the back suggests a date between the late 1930's and the early 1950's but otherwise there is no direct evidence to suggest a date for the painting unless the title of the book it was intended to illustrate could be established. no date [circa 1940s] unknown
