1950List2914Unknown location 1950. 7 x 11 inch poster. Some small marginal tears overall excellent. A small poster for Pearl Bailey with the Louie Bellson Quartet presented by the United Service Organizations and Department of Defense. Bailey 1918–1990 was a singer dancer and actress; she started her career performing at Black nightclubs on the east coast and later performed in several Broadway hits including an all-Black version of Hello Dolly! Louie Bellson 1924–2009 was Bailey’s husband a composer bandleader and jazz drummer credited with inventing the double bass drum setup. Bailey toured regularly with the USO beginning in 1941 though this poster is likely from later; the DOD was called the Department of War until 1949 and the USO was inactive between 1945 and 1950. unknown

A documentation of a transitional decade for the US automobile as the behemoths of the late 1970s evolved into the more compact and fuel-efficient Japanese-influenced models emergent by 1990.

The Chicago Auto Show was begun in 1901 by bicycle show promoter Samuel Miles and quickly rose to prominence often regarded as the "National Auto Show" by the early 1930s. World War II curtailed the production of motor vehicles for consumers and as a result the Chicago Auto Show was not held between 1941 and 1949. In 1961 the Chicago Auto Show was moved from the International Amphitheatre to its current location at McCormick Place. 99651890-1896. Green printed paper wraps 40pp. used 8vo contents detached and loose but complete. First page headed "Programme" followed by "1 Puss in Boots" with brief narrative with dialogue of nine slides 2.5 pp. Also "Weal Pies" just title - just one slide Jack the Giant Killer with narrative then 7 titles reflecting single slide subject including "Football Player" "Policeman and Cook" etc "The Bottle" 19 slides with narrative "The Arctic Expedition" 6 slides from No.1 'The ship is now frozen in the Arctic Ocean' to no.6 'An adventure with a polar bear and they are too young to kill it". Further individual slides followed by 13 for "Gulliver's Travels" followed by further individual slides concluding with one entitled "Good Night". This programme totals 14 pp. The following Programme is dated 29 Jan. 1890 and comprises a list of 42 subjects in two columns including "Arctic Expedition" but with several differences from the first programme. Perhaps part of the second programme title "Views in the Polar Regions" 6 slides described including one of inhabitants dresssed for the cold unloading a ship and landing cargo". One description "party of explorers travelling on the ice" has a line through it and the word "Funeral" added in red ink- I can offer no explanation. This is followed by a sequence of descriptions of slides with titles like "Salt Mines""Graham's Island" "Geyser" "Aurora". Other "Programmes" follow dating 1890 to 1896 some edited with ticks or crossings out including same or similar titles lengthy description of the 9 slides that make up "Red Riding Hood". Several programmes have a total number of slides and/or timing e.g. "60 Pictures occupying 1 hour". At the other end of the Notebook there is a "List of Slides" titles with numbers grand total with further technical information about shows "118 Pictures 1 hymn 1 Song Drawing slide . . . 12 ft fron Lens to Sheet 3 ft from Lens to Floor Long side of sheet across. Lantern 3.3 from floor Articles underlined Lantern slides Smoked Glass Sheet and Frame . . .items needed . . .Whistle Wedges . . ." Although presumably an amateur the show-man was obviously professional and thorough in his preparations as this manuscript reveals. The subjects also strongly indicate public taste and Arctic Exploraration seems to be a dominant interest at the time. [1890-1896] paperback
1875List3681Cincinnati: F.W. Helmick 1875. Quarto 14 x 10 ½ inches 5 pp. Binding split some marginal chips good condition. Sentimental minstrel-era ballad associated with the touring repertory of J.H. Haverly’s Mastodon Minstrels one of the largest and most commercially successful minstrel organizations of the 1870s with an illustrated cover using the trope of an elderly African American man which was popular in Uncle Tom’s Cabin-era touring shows. The song is attributed to John Rutledge a performer and songwriter active within late nineteenth-century minstrel circuits whose compositions circulated primarily through stage performance and regional sheet music publication. The title was originally sung by Milton G. “Milt†Barlow 1843–1882 a prominent minstrel comedian and vocalist frequently billed as a “Dutch†or character performer and long associated with Haverly’s troupe. Published in Cincinnati by F.W. Helmick a regional music publisher active in issuing popular songs minstrel pieces and theatrical repertory during the 1870s. The sheet has four holdings in OCLC as well as Vassar’s Harriet Beecher Stowe collection. F.W. Helmick unknown

171962577Erie PA: Erie Litho & Printing Co. March 17 1923. Large double atlas folio dual-sided broadside printed on newsprint sized 9.25 x 42 in. photo & woodcut engraving illustrations recto & verso toning to paper some chipping & edgewear paper repairs to closed tears still a G- copy. First edition thus of this advertising broadside for Erickson’s “J.W. Johnson’s Old Reliable Virginia Minstrels World’s best colored show. . . “ which touts their supposed 15 year history and appear to have either been reformed from the “Alabama Minstrels†show which played throughout the West and Midwest from 1905-1914 or simply taken over some of their acts. The contortionist fire king Hi Henry Hunt who appears in this broadside regularly performed with the “Alabama Minstrels†from 1905-1913. The silver voiced tenor A.J. McFarland and Grace Arniot Royal Entertainer depicted on the broadside also appear to have been African-American rather than black face performers. The name appears to have been drawn from the 19th-Century original “Virginia Minstrels†or the “Melodious Ethiopian Band†which featured Billy Whitlokc Dick Pelham Frank Brower and Dan Emmett performing in New York’s Bowery Amphitheater in 1843 and launched the minstrelsy form of entertainment. Emmett is perhaps best remembered as the author of “Dixie†which ironically would become the Confederate States unofficial anthem.
