2020006974London U.K.: Omnibus Press 2020. Book. New. Trade Paperback. Signed by Authors. 1st Edition. Trade Paperback - 1st. Print - NEW - Signed by Steve Howe on bookplate attached to ffep - Renowned guitarist Steve Howe tells his own story in his own words often unflinchingly as he recounts times of triumph and torment amidst the cream of the UK's prog rock bands. Best known for his work with Yes a group prone to sudden upheavals and AOR supergroup Asia Steve Howe's passage through these and other bands is a roller-coaster ride of constant touring tense recording sessions and frequent trips to all corners of the globe. A workaholic he soon realised that the temptations of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle weren't for him and instead dedicated his life to excellence in musicianship. Born in North London in 1947 Steve got his first guitar at the age of 12 and thereafter devoted himself passionately to mastering its intricacies. After spells in psychedelic bands of the late sixties he was invited to join Yes in 1970 thus finding himself in a spotlight that shines to this day. In the meantime he raised a family adopted vegetarianism as a lifestyle and watched as many of his peers succumbed to the impulses he managed to avoid. As well as Yes and Asia Steve has led bands of his own released numerous solo recordings in many different musical styles and amassed a legendary collection of priceless stringed instruments. Inscribed on verso with large gold and red photography studio insignia "Houseworth's Souvenir Hotographs sic" and on recto "Houseworth the Leading Photographer 12 Montgomery Street San Francisco Cal." signatures in ink on verso "Edward Edward Niles" "Grace Niles G Grace".

J.H. Haverly was an American theatre manager and promoter known for his production of "minstrel shows" a racist form of theatrical entertainment wherein white performers donned blackface makeup and portrayed skits and characters which relied on offensive stereotypes. Haverly's troupe was noted for its impressive size and scope involving forty to one hundred different performers and lavish production value. The Mastodon Minstrels drew comparison to P.T. Barnum and other successful circuses of the day for their use of music dance acrobatics and burlesque. One notable portrait at the center of the card shows the troupe's manager Charles Frohman who would go on to become a prolific producer of American theatre and is best remembered for producing J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. Both top corners worn and rounded. Small 1/4" tear to mount at bottom edge not affecting image. An interesting artifact advertising a problematic theatrical tradition. unknown

The summer of 1996 ended well with an operation that successfully treated an eye which had been useless for almost ten years. Further good news on the health front followed in March 1997. Thus fortified Sir Alec continued his journal for the next eighteen months. These were tumultuous times for the nation - the election of Mr Blair the death of Diana - but other matters continued to hold equal importance in Hampshire: the difficulties of the plane trees during the dry summer the extraordinary appearance in the skies of the Hale-Bopp comet the vulnerability of the hassocks in Steep Church and the experiments with Chinese cooking encouraged by Ken Hom's TV enthusiasm. And then of course there are the books films and plays that were enjoyed - mostly - throughout the year.Dickens and Patrick O'brian are read with delight. Shakespeare's birthday his 433rd is celebrated with a visit to Baz Lurmann's film Wiliam Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' which gives pleasure despite its title and despite the fact that it leads to the melancholy thought that the worst Romeo ever was 'none other than me moi-meme'. And a revival of Terence Rattigan's 'Cause Celebre' at the Lyric Theatre prompts some memories of the playwright who is putting bums on seats thirty years after he was dismissed by the avant-garde. Sir Alec reports on these matters - local national and cultural - with varying measures of acerbity and affection and muses fascinatingly on books films and theatre. The result is a worthy successor to the highly acclaimed volume of diaries.
Please contact seller @ rpaxtonden@blueyonder.co.uk for correct shipping/Pp quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
