Lo Chat Noir, il cabaret aperto nel novembre 1881 da Rodolphe Salis, iniziò servendo vino di poco pregio in un ambiente privo di sfarzo ma già, sulla porta, i clienti erano accolti da uno svizzero splendidamente gallonato, coperto d'oro dalla testa ai piedi, incaricato di far entrare i pittori e i poeti lasciando fuori gli «infami curati e i militari». Lo frequentavano scrittori, musicisti e artisti come Verlaine, Henri Rivière, Debussy, Toulouse-Lautrec, Satie, Steinlen, Laforgue, Bruant, Signac, Strindberg, Proust. I poeti e gli chansonnier che vi si esibivano attirarono la miglior Parigi, i cui rappresentanti venivano apostrofati con battute salaci: «Guarda un po'! Sei finalmente uscito di prigione?» oppure «Cosa ne hai fatto della tua sgualdrina di ieri?» rivolto a un nuovo cliente accompagnato dalla moglie. Secondo Jean Lorrain, lo Chat Noir fu «un calderone di tutti gli stili e tutte le stravaganze, la bottega dell'artista rigattiere, di tutto un quartiere d'imbrattatele e poeti, un museo picaresco e barocco delle elucubrazioni di scapigliati venuti ad arenarsi tutti là per vent'anni, di tutti questi relitti: il cattivo gusto accanto a deliziose trovate, voli di nudità gracili e perverse, sferzate di rose e nimbi d'oro, gufi impagliati, ferri battuti e gatti di maiolica...». Lo Chat Noir inventò il modo moderno di fare spettacolo, anticipando tutti gli altri cabaret. Questo libro ne restituisce la storia, le luci della ribalta, i tic e le atmosfere libertine.

The play starred William Prince as Isherwood and Julie Harris as Sally Bowles a role which earned her a Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Play. Very good copy with some minor fading to the cloth at the spine and a faint hint of edge wear without dust jacket. The play was adapted into a film in 1955 with a screenplay by John Collier music by Malcolm Arnold and starring Julie Harris Laurence Harvey and Shelley Winters. Random House hardcover books
