A very good copy. A programme for an evening of dance and music promoting Vera Grist a promising young Melbourne Dancer reviewed by The Argus 23rd Aug 1939; 'Dancer's Recital. A number of delightful and well-danced pieces in Miss Vera Grist's recital last night proved that the excellent reputation she has been gaining as a character dancer is thoroughly deserved. She has an adequate technique and used it to good advantage in her first four classical numbers but her forte was the more highly dramatic or comic pieces. Miss Grist's teacher Madame Saronova who arranged the dances appeared with her in a pretty Dutch clog dance. Among those who assisted Miss Grist were Misses Winifred Egan. Dorothy Simpson Roma Smith Ruth Michael and Valda Johnstone and Mr. Kelvin Plant.' The Bulletin similarly reported on another event the previous year 'A Jack Cato camera made this picture of Vera Grist a young Melbourne dancer winner of the Vic. Society of Dancings scholarship. Vera was chosen to take part in the augmented ensemble scenes of 'Le Coq dOr' and even her teacher Saronova didnt recognise her pupil in the wings just before the ballet commenced for she was completely disguised as a dwarf with a beard and ruddy cheeks. Vera is thrilled because Anton Dolin has promised to give her lessons.' Inscribed in folder next to her portrait 'To my dear teacher Lucie Saronova with my grateful thanks to all you have done Vera'. Madam Lucie Saronova 1900-1988 a student of Maestro Enrico Cecchetti and was the founding organizer and first chairman of the Australian Cecchetti Society branch of the imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing; her term of office covering a record span of 37 years from 1934-1971.
