27931New York City: Metropolitan Opera Co. INSCRIBED by Ms Stevens. Faint dimple in lower left corner. Very Good. 9-7/8" x 8" <br/><br/>"One of the great voices of the Metropolitan Opera New York-born mezzo-soprano Rise Stevens made her debut with the company in 1939 as Octavian in Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier". Her other notable roles in 21 years with the company included the two characterizations most associated with her the title role in Bizet's "Carmen" and Dalila in Saint-Saens's "Samson et Dalila." Furthermore Ms Stevens is known for literally saving the entire 1961 season. After the company had canceled its entire 1961-62 schedule due to stalled labor negotiations a persuasive telegram from Rise Stevens convinced President Kennedy to intervene and he ordered the Secretary of Labor to arbitrate the dispute. Just three weeks later the entire season was reinstated on schedule demonstrating notables such as President Kennedy were not immune to the entreaties of the Met's attractive reigning mezzo-soprano. A great beauty as well as a great singer she also enjoyed one of the more successful careers of the many opera singers who made films most notably in "The Chocolate Soldier" opposite Nelson Eddy and "Going My Way" with Bing Crosby & Barry Fitzgerald. She was also something of a fixture on early TV appearing frequently on such programs as "The Bell Telephone Hour" & "The Voice of Firestone" where she sang both operatic arias & popular songs. She also appeared on one of the first telecasts from the Met in 1954 singing her favored role of Carmen opposite one of her most frequent Don Joses Richard Tucker." IMDb. Italian librettos were translated into German owing to the growing popularity of opera in Germany during the last decade of the 18th century; contemporary to Mozarts death in 1791. Mozart immediately accepted at least the title under which on of his works would become known in the German-speaking countries: writing home on 3 October 1790 he reported on Tuesday the theatrical company of the elector of Mainz are performing my Don Juan. German communities variously received Mozarts operas; the battle between the aristocratic and bourgeois audiences raged to and fro. When Don Juan played for the first time in the Frankfurt theater it was deemed suitable for the general public but not for its educated section. Yet the critics could all concede of Mozarts popularity and that the subject matter turned the heads of the public. This fine well-preserved dual text is an early and complete keyboard transcription of the opera. It gives Lorenzo da Ponte's original Italian with the German translation by Schröder underneath. Excellent piece of music history and staple of the standard operatic repertoire. Breitkopf & Härtel hardcover books
