P002834Havana Cuba: Imp. "Marti" 1941. Octavos 23 à 15.5 cm. Single folded leaves printed to rectos and versos; 4 pp. each. Very good. Three programs for performances in Cuba of the Original Ballet Russe a ballet company established in 1932 by René Blum and Colonel Wassily de Basil as successor to Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes founded in 1909. A disagreement between De Basil and Blum resulted in the company's split in 1936. De Basil's "Original Ballet Russe" retained such famous dancers as Riabouchinska David Lichine and Roman Jasinski and traveled extensively throughout Europe and America. In March 1941 the company arrived in Havana where it was enthusiastically met but the season was marred by a labor strike and the De Basil's inability to adequately pay the company. As a result many dancers lingered in the Cuban capital for months and were forced to take on other jobs including appearances in nightclubs to survive. The season included works such as Fokine's "Les Sylphides" "Paganini" "Prince Igor" "Petrouchka" "Sheherazade" and Massine's "Symphonie Fantastique" "Les Presages" and "Le Beau Danube.". unknown books
