She apologises for not being able to be 'helpful on any of your questions'. She does not even possess a copy of her own 'Designing and Making Stage Costume'. 'I have no Motley designs at all as every one which was in my possession has been sold to the University of Illinois who have taken the whole collection of about 3000 swatches.' She is glad to hear that he has some of them 'as it means that there are a few still in this country'. 9979Undated. England 1880s. 4to 4 pp. Bifolium. 87 lines. Text clear and complete. Fair on aged paper with wear to extremities and a spike hole to one corner. Written in ink in a Victorian hand and with three changes in pencil. Docketed at head 'The art of Vocalization'. Towards beginning writes that the subject is one which he has 'studied many years in close connexion with the most eminent Masters of Italy most of whom I may rank among my personal friends and the pith of whose conversations added to my own experience I propose embodying in a few short essays upon the Formation of the Voice'. Gives 'the advice of a tenor singer of some renown in Otello &c literally as I heard it spoken to a student - the author died two years ago at Milan' beginning: 'I know but little of music - in comparison to me you are a professor - my voice was by nature imperfect - my figure is diminutive - yet I have been 1st tenor of some of the best Theatres and with success - mark me if you want to sing .'. 196088091<p><b>CULTURAL REVOLUTION MODEL OPERA</b></p><p>Manuscript Ledger Master Inventory: General Record of Stage Props for a traveling Chinese theatrical repertory company introducing Revolutionary Opera into its program including costs for creating silk stage props sets costumes and scenery with various paper slip receipts some loose dated from 1963 to 1969. Oblong album measuring 7-3/4 x 10-5/8 inches contents with 20 numbered leaves of double-sided ruled ledger; bound in brown cloth-backed plain light blue paper board with lettered pink paper label decorative pattern endpapers originally with ribbon-tied spine now lost contents loose.</p><p>Includes entries for the revolutionary opera <i>Taking Tiger Mountain</i> 1968 with one entry bearing signature of Wang Xiu Wen dated 12 September 1967. Includes a pink silk armband laid into the album inscribed "Mei Ying Shan" which could be translated as Huaying Mountain. </p><p>https://www.youtube.com/watchv=cjE0LDNycE8</p><p>There is also reference to a 1961 novel which the Bejing Film Studio made into a movie called <i>Lie Huo Zhong Yong Sheng</i> Living Forever in Burning Flame its IMDB title translated as <i>Red Crag</i> based partly on fact by Chinese authors Luo Guangbin and Yang Yiyan former inmates in a Kuomintang prison in Sichuan. It was set in Chongqing during the Chinese Civil War 1949 and featured underground communist agents under the command of Zhou Enlai fighting an espionage battle against the Kuomintang. The story takes place in Huaying Mountain.</p> hardcover

Thirty names with sums subscribed. The list is headed 'The Lord Mayor Salomons 5. - five pounds'. David Salomons was Lord Mayor of London in 1855. Several of the names are ticked in pencil with another noted as 'Not paid' and another as 'Dead'. Among the subscribers is the poet Martin Farquhar Tupper one pound. Sloping upwards towards the corner and underlined: ‘Luigi Montesanto 1936’. On shiny art paper and in fair condition lightly creased and a little dog-eared at the corner of the signature. The cutting is headed: ‘Prologue Pagliacci . . . . Leoncavallo LUGI MONTESANTO PROLOGUE’ with thirty-two lines of English translation. From the reverse it would appear that the cutting relates to a series of records Montesanto made with Toti dal Monte for His Masters Voice. Dated by Montesanto to 1936.
