Erworben im Oktober 1931 bei Perl, Berlin, verso Auktionsnummer "457", mit der Zuschreibung an Thomas Wyck (1616-1677). Bei Sotheby's London, Auktion vom 13.12.2001, wurde als Lot 234 dasselbe Motiv, ebenfalls eine Rötelzeichnung, Größe 15:26 cm, als Arbeit von Pieter Bout angeboten und auch verkauft Wir vermuten, daß es sich bei unserer Zeichnung um eine 2. Fassung handelt.

In 2° (34x21 cm); due tomi: (12), 483, (25), (8), 114, (14) pp. e (20), 615, (53) pp. Legature coeve in piena pergamena con dorso a 5 nervi e titolo in oro ai tasselli su fascetta in pelle. Qualche difetto e segno del tempo alla legatura. All’interno del primo volume bruniture sparse dovute alla qualità della carta utilizzata e per il resto in buone condizioni di conservazione. Antica nota di possesso privato alla prima carta bianca “Del Sig.r Cap.o Gardini”. Al frontespizio, stampato in rosso e nero, bella marca tipografica di Leonardo Chouet con Salamandra tra le fiamme in cornice figurata. Il primo volume contiene, come indicato sul front., e con proprio front.:Raymundi Io. Fortis Veronensis...De febribus et morbis mulierum facile cognoscendis atque curandis. Genevae: sumptibus Leonardi Chovet, MDCLXXVII. Bel ritratto dell’autore all’inizio de primo volume, opera di Francesco Diodati. Prima edizione, rara a reperirsi completa dei due volumi, di questo importante testo medico scritto dal celebre dottore veronese, Giovanni Raimondo Forti conosciuto anche con il cognome di Gianforti o Giansorti (1603-1678). Di umili origini, venne mantenuto agli studi grazie all’interessamento di un ricco concittadino. Ottenne la laurea in medicina presso l’ateneo padovano, praticò l’arte medica prima a Venezia e poi a Udine. Qui, in particolare, la sua fama di grande medico lo porta all’attenzione delle autorità universitarie di Padova che decidono di assegnargli la cattedra di Medicina presso l’ateneo patavino. Nel 1676 è chiamato a Vienna dall’Imperatore Leopoldo Secondo come medico personale. Quando rientra in Italia viene nominato cavaliere di San Marco per i meriti scientifici. Forti è celebre in quanto fu tra i primi medici in Europa a praticare la trasfusione del sangue, come sottolineato da Wellcome vol III, p. 44 “Forti was among the first medical men to experiment with blood transfusion in man in Europe”. La pratica della trasfusione del sangue, utilizzata per la prima volta dal medico ufficiale di Luigi XIV, Jean-Baptiste Denys nel 1667, nonostante la morte del paziente in cura (al quale Denys trasfuse sangue animale), si diffuse in Europa e alcuni medici, fra i quali Forti provarono diverse volte a salvare i propri pazienti in condizioni critiche, proprio con le trasfusioni. I continui decessi portarono diversi stati a proibire la pratica che venne poi ripresa solo all’inizio del XIX° secolo da James Blundell. Il primo volume di quest’opera uscì nel 1669 ma nel 1678, anno della morte di Forti l’opera, integrata e corretta, venne ristampata. Apparve poi postuma la seconda parte, a se stante (tanto che molte bibliografie ritengono il secondo volume come opera a parte) che presenta e completa gli ultimi lavori di Forti, particolarmente legati, appunto, alla circolazione del sangue. Edizione veramente rara, manca a Waller, Wellcome, Choix, Blake, Osler, Garrison-Morton *Ebert 9160: "A. de Haen (1704-1776) of the hague. A pupil of Boerhave; a colleague of Van Swieten, and associated with him in the foundation of the old Vienna school. Advocate of simplicity in treatment. He used a clicnical thermometer".
