Good to very good. One of the more atmospheric plates from Adam's suite documenting the exhumation return and state funeral of Napoleon in 1840. The plate forms part of Victor Adam's Retour en France des Depouilles Mortelles de Napoleon a suite of twenty lithographs documenting the Retour des Cendres. The scene depicts visitors making a final pilgrimage to Napoleon's tomb at St Helena shortly before the removal of his remains to France in October 1840. Jean-Jacques Champin était fils du maire de Sceaux. Dès 1815 il s'intéresse à un art encore nouveau la lithographie inventée en 1798 et produit ainsi en 1816 sa première lithographie L'Église de Sceaux. Élève de Félix Storelli et de Jacques Auguste Regnier admirateur de Jean-Victor Bertin Champin se consacre principalement aux paysages historiques. Il entreprend à cette fin des voyages depuis la visite de la Grande Chartreuse en 1823 les Pyrénées en 1825 et ensuite jusqu'à l'Italie en 1830. Notre exemplaire est offert par Le Rnd. Pre.
