The catalog measuring 8.25" x 10.5" contains 60 lots fully illustrated in color with several fold-outs on 100 pages.The photographs in this auction present a wide cross section of Eggleston's work including numerous examples of his best known work. The sale has images from most of Eggleston's important series such as Dust Bells 10 D.70.V1 Southern Suite and Graceland as well as the entire Troubled Waters portfolio. But most notably it includes a full set of the Los Alamos portfolios—75 dye transfer prints taken from 1965 to 1974 encompassing all of the artists major concerns and themes. Printed in 2002 in an edition of only seven with three artist's proofs this auction was the first time that this influential body of work was offered in the New York auction market.Los Alamos was executed during several "spontaneous and aimless" road trips revolving around the center of his world—Memphis and the Mississippi Delta—and as far west as New Orleans to Las Vegas and southern California ending on the Santa Monica Pier. Los Alamos is dedicated to showing the moody lyrical beauty that surrounds us at all times and in all places. Particularly coveted because it contains the first color photograph Eggleston made—of a red-haired grocery clerk pushing a shopping cart in the raking red-hued light at the end of the day—Los Alamos helped reposition color photography as "fine art" among aficionados in the photographic world.The Los Alamos portfolio is included in this auction catalogue as a series of five fold-outs. 12864Letter: Brooke Norfolk. 8 April no year. List of pictures with reference to a letter of 25 April 1868. Letter: 6pp. 12mo on bifolium and single leaf. An vivid and entertaining letter shedding light on Victorian valuation and auctioneering practices. Barling wastes no time in passing on the bad news. 'I am very glad you have written to me about the Bawdeswell. pictures & I can tell you last world underlined plainly what the 2 Christie's opinion was which I cd. not do to poor old Clarke. Stoughton. The inspection in issue was a grievous disappointment. So far worse than I cd. have possibly believed and then coming the question cd. two such Men as the Christies be wrong for my part I think impossible last word underlined twice to have them looked over again by some other authority - in as few words as I can put it I will give the Messrs. C opinion there being no difference between them. taking 4 or 5 pictures the so named Danae by Rubens which they clearly set down as a vulgar daub and the Minervas & if I recollect "choice of Paris" these I think old Clarke S considered the very valuable lot - I said to Christie "now will it answer to send these up to London oh no said he - then I said what sum wd. they returrn after expenses 30£ he said they might return about 30 - however to cut the matter short - they said "there is not a picture in the house of any value and we knew it when we had been in it a very short time" this of course was as bad as bad cd. be'. Regarding 'the fowl pieces' - 'probably Spanish copies' - Barling exclaims: 'Surely they must the family I mean have been under an awful delusion! particularly as to price paid by the C o Cl: or he must have been an awful Noodle or the Christies the first firm in the World in that line know nothing of their business'. He feels that Beevor's 'good tact & judgment' will direct him 'for the best in the rather difficult affairs'. He now changes the subject reporting 'a frightful murder in Shotesham tho: the woman yet breathed this morning.' deploring the conduct of 'H P' and stating that he has received 'a very melancholy note from E R Br. yesterday in reference to himself - he says "that his strength has become "but labour & sorrow" and that "the conclusion cannot be far away". He concludes with other local news. Accompanying the letter is a list in another hand of six paintings 1p. 12mo on worn paper totalling £1200 in price. Above it Barling has written 'Catalogue of Pictures' and beneath it 'Clarke Stoughton Esqe.'. At the foot of the page Barling writes in red ink 'Deposited for Policy No 2199 See Lr. 25th April 1868'. Softcover. both volumes in Fine condition each protected by a new mylar jacket. color and B&W photographs Lavishly-produced two-volume catalogue of the two-day auction held at Christie's London of Princess Margaret's lifetime accumulation of Royal Stuff. The Daily Mail reported that the first day of the sale was "was packed with more than 1000 bidders in four sweltering rooms including several ranks of staff assigned to take telephone bids from at least 500 potential customers." The swag was flogged by her son Lord Linley reportedly "to raise cash for crippling inheritance taxes" and it was to put it mildly a frenzy: "Trinkets that were expected to fetch only £40 or £50 commanded prices in the thousands. Once-treasured items valued in mere hundreds of pounds suddenly soared into five figure bids. The surge of interest was brought about by what observers labelled the 'princess premium' - that hard-to-predict public interest in matters royal and historic. Most estimates said the sale would raise around £3 million in total but that figure was exceeded after the first few hours today." The paper also reported that "the scramble to scoop up Margaret mementoes is also certain to widen a bitter rift between Linley and his father Lord Snowdon Antony Armstrong-Jones divorced from Margaret in 1978 who is said to be 'seething' about the sale. One former friend of the princess said today it was 'too vulgar for words' adding: 'It has all the dignity of a royal car boot sale. They might as well have stuck up banners saying ''everything must go''.'" And one cannot help but noting that the consignor of all this stuff Lord Linley aka David Linley having been on the board of directors of Christie's UK since 2005 became the firm's chairman about six months after this sale took place.
