Friedlaender had fled Switzerland for the US in 1936 duly becoming an investment banker in New York. He was a serious and knowledgeable book and manuscript collector with a focus on incunabula and early printing in general and on illuminated manuscripts while not neglecting works by later European authors. . . . A copy of the preface to that work titled "My Education as a Bibliophile" can be found online including for instance on Jeremy Norman's "HistoryOfScience" site.
