017197Robert Heathcote (ca.1775-1823), collectionneur d'art, bibliophile (vente de sa bibliothèque par Sotheby's en 1824). L.A.S., Stanford, 28 décembre 1802, 1p in-4. Belle lettre amicale à l'acteur François-Joseph Talma (1763-1826), encre un peu éclaircie, français avec nombreuses erreurs (en partie corrigées dans la transcription). « Je vous salue mon cher Talma. J'ai pris la liberté de vous envoyer une lettre pour [John Philip] Kemble enveloppée. Et j'espère que vous aurez la bonté de la rendre quand vous le verrez à Paris. J'ai trouvé tous mes amis en bonne santé et les bien aisé [?] de me voir. Je suis parfaitement rétabli et l'air d'Angleterre le convient beaucoup. Le printemps prochain je vous attendrai et madame Talma aussi. Mes meilleurs compliments à [Antoine] Michot et à votre épouse. Je suis à présent dans le plus beau pays du monde pour la chasse au renard et je la suis avec toute l'ardeur possible. Adieu mon ami je vous attends en Angleterre avec impatience. Tout à vous. Robert Heathcote ». Cette lettre est très intéressante car elle suit un voyage de Haethcote en France, entre mai et juillet 1802, voyage particulièrement documenté, tant par les mémoires de Michael Kelly, publiés en 1826, que par le journal de Kemble, avec qui Heathcote voyagea. Ainsi, on sait qu'en deux mois Heathcote a assisté à plusieurs représentations avec Talma, que Talma et Heathcote ont diné une douzaine de fois ensemble, qu'Heathcote a offert du porto, des livres de Shakespeare (dont Macbeth), Racine (Phèdre) ou Molière (Tarfuffe), évidemment en édition originale. Curieusement, ces livres ne sont pas apparus dans le catalogue de sa bibliothèque (Paris, Nève, 1827). Lors du bal masqué au Tivoli, le 20 juin, Talma, déguisé en Brutus, danse avec Heathcote. Déchirures réparées. Cachets de cire. Très intéressant document. [403]
