With short typed note on a slip from Solomon Freehof to his colleague Walter Jacob. Uncommon. Epstein 1829–1908 was a rabbi and halakhic authority rabbi of Novogrudok Belaruss. According to an online encyclopedia "Epstein's fame rests upon his Arukh ha-Shul an consisting of novellae and halakhic rulings on the four parts of the Shul an Arukh: Ora ayyim 1903–07 Yoreh De'ah 1894–98 Even ha-Ezer 1905–06 and oshen Mishpat 1884–93. In the introduction to the volume on oshen Mishpat Epstein explains that just as Maimonides saw the need to compose the Mishneh Torah and Joseph Caro the Shul an Arukh in order to codify the halakhah in their times there was now a need to bring the Shul an Arukh up to date by giving the halakhic rulings which had been promulgated by authorities subsequent to Caro both in works devoted to that purpose and in responsa. He said that "great anxiety and confusion" had resulted from those new rulings and his work was intended to give the final halakhic summation up to his day. Although in its external arrangement the work follows the chapters of the Shul an Arukh in its internal arrangements he conforms to that of the Mishneh Torah of Maimonides. According to Epstein the principal aim of the study of Torah is not dialectical and casuistic exercise the "uprooting of mountains"; but to arrive at a definite knowledge of the halakhah. The Stage Guild Plays No. 1 Series A one-act comedy set in Indiana about a man who with the collaboration of his son an Army deserter and general ne'er-do-well who is falsely reported to have been killed in battle along the Mexican border and his brother connives to defraud the government into granting him a pension as a veteran of the Civil War even though he never actually served. Kenneth Sawyer Goodman was a Chicago-born playwright; a Princeton graduate and the son of a millionaire lumber baron he was involved in Chicago's Little Theatre movement and was the author of numerous one-act plays which ranged from light comedy to melodrama to social criticism. Ben Hecht fell in with him early in his career and together they wrote a number of what Hecht in his autobiography called "sane and practical little plays." Although the publication states that this particular piece "was originally presented by the Washington Square Players at the Comedy Theatre New York on the night of February 12th 1917" that's actually not true: it was first staged in Chicago in late September 1916 one of several one-acts by Goodman and Hecht to be presented in Chicago that year. The publisher Frank Shay's "Stage Guild Plays" seems to have been a carrying-on of Goodman's legacy since by the time this "No. 1" was published in 1920 Goodman himself was dead having perished of pneumonia in November 1918 at the age of 35 -- and yet of the eighteen available plays published under this banner listed in an ad near the back of this one sixteen were written or co-written by him. As an even more substantial tribute Goodman's father established the Goodman Theatre which opened in 1925 as part of the Art Institute of Chicago and still operates today as the city's oldest nonprofit theater company with a distinguished history of award-winning productions. . Signed "BenG". Folded for mailing else fine.</p><p>The American radio and television personality Benjamin Franklin Grauer 1908-1977 started as a child actor in films and on Broadway in the 1920's. He had a role in David' Warfield's "The Return of Peter Grimm" and in movies directed by D.W. Grffith. Starting in radio as an actor he became part of the staff at the National Broadcasting Company and was one of four narrators on the public affairs series "The Big Story" along with Burgess Meredith. Together with Don Gillis Grauer created the Peabody Award-winning radio series "Toscanini the Man Behind the Legend". A book collector of Fine Press books Grauer founded the "Between Hours Press" known for its fine printing and limited editions.</p><p>An illustrator and artist as well as a fine pressman and founder of the "Mermaid Press" Fridolf Johnson was an editor of American Artist Magazine until his retirement in the 1970's. As a graphic artist he designed title panels for Hollywood movies and art & typography for advertising as well as dust jacket illustrations. He wrote and illustrated his own children's books in addition to other works. He also compiled and edited the Knopf book "Rockwell Kent: An Anthology of His Work".</p> New York, September 17, 1961.
