It reflects great credit upon its printer Stansby who was an apprentice and then successor to John Windet and himself a master printer. Such work entitles him to a front rank among the printers of the reign of James I. Jonson is said to have prepared the plays for the press himself and one or two matters of editing. certainly appear to show the author's hand. At the end of each play for instance is a statement telling when it was first acted and by whom whether the king's or the queen's servants. The names of the actors are also given. All of the works not included in the first were intended for a second volume which however did not appear until after Jonson's death in 1640" Grolier 100 English.

Grolier 100 English 17. 1970822481970. Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. It reads "Sdeh. Boker 28. 2. 70 Dear Mr. George P. Viegelmann Jr. I share entirely your view that it is vitally necessary for everyone in the Middle East to live in peace. I am expressing a private view: I would be ready to give up a great Part of the areas which we hold since the six day war if this would bring peace; by peace I mean friendship with our Arab neighbors and cooperation politically economically and culturally but perhaps only Russia can bring this about. I even doubt whether the American Gov. can achieve that. In the future there may be a change in Egypt. David Ben-Gurion." This letter is a very unique piece of history particularly in regards to Israeli-Arab relations and the study of peace in general. While publicly Ben-Gurion was the undoubted leader in Zionism privately at the end of his life he began to have other opinions. He desired peace even if it meant giving up land that they had fought to obtain. Ben-Gurion's thoughts on peace in his latter years is corroborated by the recent documentary Ben-Gurion Epilogue. This movie features footage that was taken in 1968 and only recently discovered. In the footage he explains that Israel's moral compass was inexorably tied to its treatment of the non-Jews living under its rule. Double matted and framed opposite a photograph of Ben-Gurion. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 16.5 inches. David Ben-Gurion was the primary founder of the State of Israel and the first Prime Minister of Israel. Ben-Gurion's passion for Zionism which began early in life led him to become a major Zionist leader and Executive Head of the World Zionist Organization in 1946. As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935 and later president of the Jewish Agency Executive he was the de facto leader of the Jewish community in Palestine and largely led its struggle for an independent Jewish state in Mandatory Palestine. On 14 May 1948 he formally proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel and was the first to sign the Israeli Declaration of Independence which he had helped to write. Ben-Gurion led Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and united the various Jewish militias into the Israel Defense Forces. Subsequently he became known as "Israel's founding father." unknown books

194824454
In 1947 as the British mandate over Palestine established by the League of Nations in 1922 was about to expire the United Nations called for partition of Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states. Jewish leaders accepted the plan but Arab leaders announced that they would oppose its implementation by force. President Harry Truman had endorsed partition despite opposition within his administration. On March 19 1948 the U.S. shockingly reversed its position supporting partition; instead it called for a temporary United Nations trusteeship.

David Ben-Gurion as head of the Jewish Agency masterfully worked to contain the damage. Less than two months after writing this letter Ben-Gurion and the recipient of this letter Rabbi Judah Leib Fishman Maiman both would help draft and sign Israel's Declaration of Independence.
DAVID BEN-GURION.Autograph Letter Signed "D. Ben-Gurion" to Rabbi Yehuda Leib Fishman. March 23 1948 Israel. In Hebrew one page on The Jewish Agency for Palestine stationery. 8.5 x 11 in.
Translation

"Please convey to the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Palestine the following – As I was deprived of the possibility of taking part in the meetings of the Executive I ask to be allowed to appoint a member to be the head of Defence so that I can transfer this work from myself as soon as possible. I wish to point out that because of the remarks that were heard in the discussion of our answers to the American announcement I refer to the remarks of Golda Myerson and Kolotny I am of the opinion that paragraph 'C' should be changed by way of adding a demand for an immediate agreement that a temporary Government be formulated in accordance with the version that I gave to my Secretary Svi Marmion."

Historical Background

Ben-Gurion responded forcefully to the new American position in a statement to the Tel Aviv Press Club on March 20: "We shall not agree to any kind of trusteeship whether permanent or temporary even for the shortest time. We shall no longer submit to any foreign domination whatever. … The Jewish State exists and will continue to exist because we defend it. … our political program falls under three headings in the order I name them: security; a Jewish State; a Jewish-Arab alliance."

On March 22 Abba Hillel Silver on behalf of the Jewish Agency indicated that the Agency would not discuss the American proposal for trusteeship as it had not yet been submitted to the Security Council. The next day the Jewish Agency for Palestine and the National Council of Jews of Palestine Vaad Leumi issued a joint statement that Israel intended to proceed to independence.

Ben-Gurion was determined to strengthen their position by shaping his provisional government and making it clear that the Jewish state would come into being with or without international approval. Accordingly on March 25 Moshe Shertok Sharett sent the chairman of the U.N. Palestine Commission an urgent request for the establishment of a provisional government including a list of proposed members.

The "'paragraph C'" referenced in the present letter undoubtedly corresponds to a passage in either the March 23 or March 25 statements to the U.N. For the full final text of both see Appendices A and B below.

As noted the final wording was influenced by future Israeli prime minister Golda Meir and by Moshe Kolodny Kol. They may have been advocating for the wording that appeared in the third paragraph of the March 25 statement "the Provisional Council of Government thus designated be empowered in consultation with the United. Nations Commission to co-opt additional members representing groups both Arab and Jewish…"

Rabbi Judah Leib Fishman Maiman 1875–1962 the recipient of this letter was born in Bessarabia and emigrated to Palestine in 1913. A renowned author and Talmudic scholar he was a founding member of Mizrachi. He helped draft Israel's Declaration of Independence and became Minister of Religions and War Victims. He served in the First Knesset until 1951.

APPENDIX A

STATEMENT ADOPTED BY THE JEWISH AGENCY FOR PALESTINE

AND THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF THE JEWS OF PALESTINE

VAAD LEUMI MARCH 23 1948

The Jewish Agency for Palestine and the Vaad Leumi have learned with regret and astonishment of the attitude adopted by the United States representative in the Security Council concerning the United Nations decisions on Palestine.

The Jewish Agency and the Vaad Leumi declare:

1. The Jewish people and the Yichev in Palestine will oppose any proposal designed to prevent or postpone the establishment of the Jewish State.

2. We categorically reject any plan to set up a trusteeship regime for Palestine even for a short period of time. A trusteeship would necessarily entail a denial of the Jewish right to national independence. It would leave Palestine under a foreign military regime.

3. The failure and disintegration of the Mandatory administration the continuation of which was unanimously rejected by the United Nations necessitates the early arrival in Palestine of the United Nations Palestine Commission. The Provisional Council of Government of the Jewish State should be recognized without delay by the United Nations Palestine Commission so that authority may be transferred to it as envisaged in the United Nations decisions.

4. Upon the termination of the Mandatory administration and not later than May 16 next a provisional Jewish government will commence to function in cooperation with the representatives of the United Nations then in Palestine. In the meantime we shall do our utmost to minimize the chaos created by the present government and we shall maintain so far as lies in our power the public services neglected by it.

5. The Jewish people extends the hand of peace to the Arab people and invites representatives of the Arab population of the Jewish State to take their rightful place in all its organs of government. The Jewish State will be glad to cooperate with the neighboring Arab States and to enter into permanent treaty relations with them to strengthen world peace and to advance the development of all countries of the Near East.

After a bloody Arab-Israeli conflict following the British withdrawal the State of Israel was proclaimed in May 1948. Ben-Gurion was designated the first Prime Minister a position he held for the majority of the next fifteen years.

APPENDIX B

THE JEWISH AGENCY FOR PALESTINE

16 East 66th Street

New York 21 N.Y.

March 25 1948

The Chairman

United Nations Palestine Commission Lake Success New York

Sir:

In pursuance of the oral representations made by me to the Commission on March 17 on behalf of the Jewish Agency for Palestine and. the National Council of the Jews of Palestine Vaad Leumi concerning the appointment of a Provisional Council of Government for the Jewish State I have the honor now as a matter of urgency to reiterate the request that the Provisional Council of the Jewish State should be immediately established and that it be composed as follows:

Mr. David Ben-Gurion Mr. Itzhak Ben-Zvi

Mr. Fritz Bernstein Mr. Eliahu Berligne

Mr. Eliahu Dobkin Mr. Meyer Grabovski

Rabbi Judah Leib Fishman Mrs. Rachel Kagan

Rabbi Wolf Gold Mr. Abraham Katznelaon

Mr. Itzhak Greenbaum Saadia Khuvashi

Mr. Eliezer Kaplan Dr. Georg Landauer

Mr. Moshe Kolodni Mr. Evi Lurie

Mrs. Goldie Meyerson Mr. Nachum Nir

Mr. Moshe Shapiro Mr. David. Pinkas

Mr. Moshe Shertok Mr. David Remez

Mr. Berl Repetur

Mr. Mordecai Shatner

Mr. Zorach Warhaftig

2. The above list comprises all the Palestinian members of the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Palestine as well as the fall membership of the National Council of the Jews of Palestine Vaad Leumi. Included are representatives of the following parties and groups:

Palestine Labor Party Mapay

General Zionists

Mizrachi Orthodox Zionists

Hapoel Hamizrachl

Hashomer Hatzair

now merged.

Achditt Avoda

Aliya Hadasha

Wizo

Yemenites Organization

3. It is proposed further that the Provisional Council of Government thus designated be empowered in consultation with the United. Nations Commission to co-opt additional members representing groups both Arab and Jewish not at present included in the membership of the Jewish Agency for Palestine or the Vaad Leumi. Negotiations with this object in view have been successfully concluded with some Jewish groups and are still in progress with others.

4. Upon the appointment of the Provisional Council of Government it is suggested that the United Nations Palestine Commission should instruct the Provisional Council to proceed with the establishment of a central administrative organ of government as indicated in Article 7 of Part I B of the Resolution of the General Assembly.

5. I venture in conclusion to point out that under Article 4 of Part I B of the Resolution of the Assembly if by 1 April 1948 a Provisional Council of Government has not been set up the United Nations Palestine Commission will be under the obligation to communicate that fact to the Security Council. It is earnestly hoped that the need for the Commission to report failure in this respect will be obviated by the immediate appointment of the Provisional Council of Government of the Jewish State.

Sincerely yours

Moshe Shertok
books

19333623Pete Rice Magazine A very scarce and desirable western title. Pete Rice Magazine was one of several single character hero pulp titles published by Street & Smith. With a cover date of November 1933 for the first issue he appeared just eight months after Doc Savage appeared on the stands and nine months after Nick Carter. The title changed to Pete Rice Western Adventures with the September 1935 issue and continued as such until the end of the run. Austin Gridley was the Street & Smith house author that the Pete Rice stories appeared under however most were written by a pulp author named of Ben Conlon. In "Cheap Thrills" Ron Goulart describes the Pete Rice realm as "built around a cowboy with a coterie of distinctive sidekicks." In his book "The Pulp Western" John Dinan considered Pete Rice more a modern detective than your typical pulp fiction cowboy "as the crimes and circumstances surrounding them were modern and not particularly western e.g. counterfeiting." Nick Carr cites Link Huller as referencing telephones and cars popping up in the stories occasionally. Pete seemed to be stuck somewhere between the old west and the early 20th century. The first 26 issues had nice striking cover art by Walter Baumhofer. Starting with the January 1936 issue R.G. Harris took over and continued until the end of the run with the June 1936 issue. Pete Rice has traditionally been a very difficult run to put together and to obtain all 32 issues can be quite a daunting task. 196322066Nice: Self-Published 1963. First edition. Loose Sheets. Very Good. Rare collection of collages editions texts and multiples in printed folder. Created between 1962 and 1963 an early and scarce offering by Vautier sometimes just known as "Ben". Loose pages laid into folder. This copy retains only a small fragment of the 45 rpm record that was part of the edition. Edition size unknown. SIGNED by the artist on a card laid in at rear. This copy has also been hand-addressed by Vautier and mailed to fellow Fluxus artist Jackson Mac Low. Comparing this copy to the one held at Fondazione Bonotto it should be noted that there are several difference. Their copy has sheets not in this example and vice-versa. In fact given the ephemeral nature of this collection of objects it seems likely that there will be some differences in content between any two copies. Sold as-is. Quite rare and early offering from Vautier.

Self-Published unknown books
1965952871965. Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. Addressed to Dr. Martin Rywell editor of Listen Magazine published in Harriman Tennessee the letter reads "Sdeh. Boker 22.6.65 Dear Dr. Martin Rywell Only the first part of the story you mention in your letter is true. I visited Burma in 1961. I met Prime Minister U Nu. We discussed Buddhism but the story about "a trick" is a pure invention. D. Ben-Gurion." The letter refers to Ben Gurion's two-week sojourn to Burma in 1961 which marked one of the longest official trips abroad for an Israeli prime minister. The first prime minister of Burma known honorifically as U Nu was a major figure among leaders of non-Western countries in the mid 20th century many of which had opposed Israel's establishment. In 1955 U Nu became the first foreign prime minister to visit the Jewish state a highly significant act of support which encouraged a mutually beneficial relationship between the two young governments. Double matted and framed with a photograph of Ben-Gurion. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 15 inches. Rare and desirable.
19651048021965. Autograph letter signed by and entirely in the hand of the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. One page text in Hebrew addressed to Eliahu Eliachar a notable Sephardic Zionist and Member of the Knesset the letter reads in full "Greetings We don't need separate political lists - not those of independent Yemenite or Sephardic political parties. Those lists can only distort/falsify the democratic process in our country and the process of integration as well. We need only Israeli lists. Too many small political groups can only affect our stability. The only way to resolve it is to change our voting system from relative voting to local voting. With great respect D. Ben-Gurion." One of Ben-Gurion's most ambitious goals in the first years of statehood was the unrestricted absorption of entire communities of newly-arrived Middle Eastern and North African Jews into the Ashkenazi-dominated Israeli society. Hundreds of thousands of new immigrants fled the inhospitable environment rising in the Islamic countries between 1948 and 1954 in the wake of the burgeoning Arab-Israeli conflict settling in the economically-ravaged war-torn state. Other European Jewish communities from Bulgaria Romania and Poland were also transplanted to the Jewish State where they were forced to reside in transit villages and immigrants camps and became involved in domestic political in-fighting and became vulnerable to enticements from anti-establishment political groupings. Ben-Gurion feared that the plethora of small political parties could potentially destabilize Israel's precarious democracy and advocated for a radical change in Israels electoral system with a two-party governing system as opposed to the European proportional representational system. Above all Ben-Gurion advocated for the swift unification of the numerous ethnic groups and the creation of an integrated singular Israeli identity. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable offering a unique glimpse into the great leader's political thought. David Ben-Gurion was the primary founder of the State of Israel and the first Prime Minister of Israel. 33No Binding. Very Good. Typed letter in Hebrew signed "D. Ben-Gurion" as Minister of Defense on State of Israel letterhead one page 6" x 8" August 26 1955. Translation of the Hebrew text: "I have no doubt that the problem of security disturbs your rest. True the problem of security at this time is the principal problem of the State. Any person - just like an entire nation - can feel the danger waiting at his door. We are a small nation and any boasting we do will only make a laughingstock out of us. But we are not powerless not in the military sense and certainly not in the moral and political sense. I however am calm and certain that when it comes to the test the Israel Defense Forces will be able to defend our peace and our sovereignty - the Israel Defense Forces is the army of the people and of all its circles and factions." He succeeded Ben-Gurion as Prime Minister from January 1954 to December 1955. When Ben-Gurion was reinstated as Prime Minister Sharett returned as Foreign Minister. He became president in June 1956 calling for pan-Arab unity. Moshe Sharett believed that Nasser had delusions of grandeur and similarly that Ben-Gurion viewed himself as a messianic liberator. Ben-Gurion thought Sharett was being too cautious. Sharett believed Ben-Gurion was unwilling to negotiate. The cabinet voted 35 to 7 in favor of Sharett's resignation and he resigned on June 18 1956. Golda Meir succeeded Sharett as Foreign Minister and served until 1966. Three years later she became Israel's fourth Prime Minister. After the Balfour Declaration of 1917 he joined the Jewish Legion of the British Army. He returned to Palestine after the war and became a leader of the Zionist movement. As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935 Ben-Gurion was effectively the leader of the Jewish population before there was a nation. 16688Stockholm WI: Midnight Paper Sales nd. A gorgeous book with an original technique of printing the images: all of them are printed directly from slices of the actual trees discussed in the book in a variation on the traditional technique of nature printing where the object itself is used to print. Schanilec has made use of this idea in a number of his projects. The multi-color prints are produced by a reduction cutting process: "after each color is printed the block is cleaned with mineral spirits the surface is cut away further and the block is printed again in a different color. . . . on close inspection some of the features may not match up exactly since they represent a deeper plane in the wood." Sylvae page 18. All of the trees featured in the book grew on Schanilec's farm in Wisconsin. Some fell due to natural causes others had to be removed for logistical reasons some were cut down for their wood for flooring and other construction projects. The nature of the grain of each piece prompted the specific techniques used to print the image. Many of the multi-colored prints are at least two full pages quite a few are massive three-page spreads. The grain patterns of the wood express the beauty of the trees. Each section of the book deals with one tree including one or more prints and a detailed discussion of the function of the tree on the farm sometimes tidbits of local history how it came to be cut down its properties and details about the specific characteristics of each piece of wood and how these affected the print-making process. The book concludes with an over sized wood cut of a large tree cut down on Schanilec's farm--the wood engraving of the tree was carved from the wood of the tree. It's beautiful but there are mixed feelings about realizing that the tree is preserved for the future through the use of its own wood for the engraving. But then that is true for all of the images in the book! There is a great respect for nature and the conservation of trees throughout this book. It is a wonderful production! The binding of the book continues the wood theme: the spine of the book is white pigskin and the sides are cut from another tree on Schanilec's farm and have been finished like a beautiful piece of furniture. The book was printed by Schanilec and Verhoeven the Bixlers cast the type Craig Jensen and Gary McLerran bound the books and Dick Sorenson did the woodwork. Housed in a deep blue fabric covered slipcase. Number 6 of 120 copies. Signed by both Schanilec and Verhoeven. A laid in notice announced that the book won the 2007 Gregynog Prize at the Oxford Book Fair. Quarter to Midnight A.261.b and A.262 Matrix 27. Schanilec considers this book to be "a far better book" than the special edition of 26 copies of the same title with a different setting of the type. Fine. Midnight Paper Sales hardcover books
