Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and two-hundred and twenty eight vignette illustrations headpieces tailpieces and plates some of which are mounted and on India paper. Collated complete. A historical and critical survey of the development of wood engraving and its principal practitioners from early European examples through to later British and continental engravers. Combining technical discussion with biographical accounts. As well as writing the text Linton himself also cut several of the blocks for the illustrations. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Small loss of cloth to back strip tail with bump to back strip head. Back strip lightly age toned. Internally firmly bound. Pages clean and bright with only the odd spot.
