Collated complete. Linton spent some considerable time sketching and painting among the scenes of antiquity depicted here: he successfully exhibited a collection of these sketches in 1842. Lacking the front free endpaper. A wonderful celebration of the landscape scenery and monuments of Greece and its Islands. In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt detailing to back strip. Boards bright with fading to back strip. Light fading to fore edge of front board. Bumping to back strip head and tail with joint heads starting and boards firmly held. Frontispiece detached and loosely inserted with binding tender throughout due to gutter percha and with pages 33 to 64 detached and loosely inserted as are the intervening plates. A collection of poetry by the engraver William James Linton. With the play 'Claribel' and the poems 'The Old Legend of King Arthur' 'The Ruined City' 'Nature's Gentleman' 'The Advent of Peace' 'Two Stories of One Fate' 'Principle and Opinion' and more. Illustrated with head and tail pieces throughout illustrated by the author. William James Linton was an Englishman who emigrated to America to try his fortune after suffering from financial difficulties in England. He is said to have reached the highest point of execution in engraving in wood. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally with a crack to the tail of the front joint. Light marking to the boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Label to the rear pastedown. Hinges are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper '. from her loving Uncle J.E.D. Christmas 1870'. Internally firmly bound. 1900P4583Berlin: Berlin Photographic Co. c.1900. Very Good. Notes: A rare signed hand coloured print of the Declaration of War between the Ottoman Empire and Austria. The painter is Sir James D. Linton and it is signed in pencil by him.<br>The Austro–Turkish War 1716–18.The Treaty of Karlowitz 1699 was not an acceptable long-standing agreement for the Ottoman Empire. Twelve years after Karlowitz the Turks began the long prospect of taking revenge for their defeat at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. This war resulted in the Austrians to maintain control over Belgrade and the Treaty of Passarowitz confirmed their gains in 1699 leaving the Turks with control over the south bank of the Danube river. The War led to the loss of Austrian holdings in Italy because of their support in the Balkans.
