1981974T2Paris: Editions Albert Skira 1981. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 12.5" by 10". Various. The complete three volume facsimile collection of Minotaure a surrealist magazine edited by Albert Skira and Stratis Eleftheriadis in the original French. French. Complete in three volumes. A facsimile collection. Minotaure is a surrealist-inspired magazine that was published from 1933 to 1939 in Paris under the joint leadership of editors Albert Skira a Swiss art publisher and Stratis Eleftheriadis a French art critic and publisher of Greek origin known as Teriade. In the tradition of Christian Zervos's Cahiers d'Art this review was devoted to contemporary art and aimed to curate a careful aesthetic. The magazine offered a certain number of artists a platform publishing theses and poetic works as well as becoming a space for visibility reproducing the works of then little-known painters or sculptors such as Alberto Giacometti Hans Bellmer Paul Delvaux or Roberto Matta. The first issue appeared in 1933 with a cover by Pablo Picasso. Slowly the writing moved away from only art opening up to articles on music and architecture notably written by the artists themselves. These volumes contain the complete thirteen issues with reproductions of the original covers with volume one containing those published in 1933 volume two those published from 1934 to 1936 and volume three containing those published in 1936 to 1939. The full set includes: No. 1 June 1933 cover by Pablo Picasso; No. 2 "Mission Dakar-Djibouti 1931-1933" June 1933 cover by Gaston-Louis Roux; No. 3 and 4 December 1933 cover by Andre Derain; No. 5 March 1934 cover by Francisco Bores; No. 6 December 1934 cover by Marcel Duchamp; No. 7 June 1935 cover by Joan Miro; No. 8 June 1936 cover by Salvador Dali; No. 9 October 1936 cover by Henri Matisse; No. 10 Winter 1937 cover by Rene Magritte; No. 11 Spring 1938 "Chercher Minotaure" cover by Max Ernst; and No. 12 and 13 May 1939 cover by Andre Masson. In the original full cloth binding. Externally excellent. original unclipped dust wrappers are very smart with minor wear to the extremities. Original paper covered slip case is sound with light bumping and sunning to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards with a crack to the bottom joint causing lifting to the bottom panel. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Fine Editions Albert Skira hardcover
16-4068Paris: Albert Skira 1937. 4to. 32 x 25cm. Original wraps. Bookblock unglued from spine. Very good. .Minotaure published in Paris between 1933–39 was a Surrealist-oriented publication founded by Albert Skira with editors André Breton and Pierre Mabille. Prior to serving as a Minotaure editor Breton lent his support by publishing the full-page advertisement reproduced to the right which announced the first issue of the new publication in the final issue of Le Surréalisme au service de la revolution.Minotaure although not exclusively Surrealist in orientation was faithful to the Surrealist spirit. The periodical’s appeal for the mainstream art public gained wider recognition for the movement especially with its feature articles on architecture not commonly found in other Surrealist publications. The goal of Minotaure was to introduce Surrealism to a new generation of theorists and artists but with the onset of World War II in Europe Skira ceased publication in 1939.Each number of Minotaure included contributions from artists writers philosophers critics and psychoanalysts and was meant to be read as a collective work. Contributors included Paul Éluard Salvador Dalí Jacques Lacan Georges Bataille and Kurt Veil. Covers included artwork by Pablo Picasso Marcel Duchamp Gaston-Louis Roux André Derain Francisco Borés Joan Miró Dalí Henri Matisse René Magritte Max Ernst André Masson and Diego Rivera.Provenance: Galerie Kornfeld Bern.
