Limited reprint edition (all copies are numbered) of 1854-1855 Berlin edition of Salzenberg's book exemplifying a growing 19th-century appreciation of Romanesque and 'Byzantine' architecture. For the original edition see Blackmer 1483; Brunet V, 103. "Salzenberg's important work remains the major source of information about the mosaics of St. Sophia". (Blackmer). 1000 copies were printed for individual persons. This copy belonged to 'Ender S. Özer Bagciman. All copies were numbered. (651/1000). The churches Salzenberg describes illustrating the development of a Christian architecture away from the secular long nave basilica or of the classical temple (never intended for congregational use), to a Greek-cross plan with a central dome, allowing greater accessibility to the altar table. Most of the text is devoted to the cathedral of the Holy Wisdom [i.e. Hagia Sophia], built-in Constantinople for Justinian I by Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus, who dared to set a large dome over a square with the support of pendentives, achieving, with eastern and western half-domes, an uninterrupted span of over 200 feet. This building provided a model or inspiration to architects of the Middle East and Europe seeking to experiment with central, domed structures. Gebonden, Hardcover 399 pages text in English. ill. 29,4 x 24,5 x 3,9 fine!. ISBN 9789064505089. AT WORK is a lavishly illustrated book charting Neutelings Riedijk Architecten competition entries, realized and unrealized projects. Clear geometric forms become sculptural buildings when given a thin skin of decorative patterns by Neutelings Riedijk Architects. Their buildings are icons whose facades give surprising views inwards. Inside, the space is captured as a formgiving element tantalizing the senses. This book takes the reader through the many layers in their work, past competition entries and from realized to unrealized projects. In this enlightening overview of ten years, model studies, cartoons, photos and plans serve to illustrate sixteen themes that vary between sculpture and pattern, cavity and stacking, arrangement and silhouette, weight and texture. Projects include: the Y Towers (Sporenburg, Amsterdam), the Minnaert Building (Utrecht) and the currently being built Museum on the River, Antwerp. Arranged into themes presenting texts and illustrations on skin and patterns, hollows and patios, model studies of the sculptures and silhouettes, cartoons, photos and plans.
New English Paperback. Large demy 8vo. (22 x 16 cm). In English. 320 p. The Church of Sancta Sophia Constantinople. Sancta Sophia is the most interesting building on the world's surface. Like Karnak in Egypt, or the Athenian Parthenon, it is one of the four great pinnacles of architecture, but unlike them this is no ruin, nor does it belong to a past world of constructive ideas although it precedes by seven hundred years the fourth culmination of the building art in Chartres, Amiens, or Bourges, and thus must ever stand as the supreme monument of the Christian cycle. Our first object has been to attempt some disentanglement of the history of the Church and an analysis of its design and construction; on the one hand, we have been led a step or two into the labyrinth of Constantinopolitan topography, on the other, we have thought that the great Church offers the best point of view for the observation of the Byzantine theory of building.
