1919144745Egypt: Privately Published 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Egypt Privately Published circa 1919. Oblong folio an album containing 96 original gelatin silver photographs each approximately 66 × 110 mm loosely inserted behind window mounts each with a printed caption four to a page on both sides of 12 leaves. Burgundy cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover beneath the Rising Sun emblem; covers slightly worn with some tarnishing to the gilt; occasional inoffensive silvering-out; in excellent condition. A scarce self-published photographic record of the 2nd Light Horse Brigade in the Sinai and Palestine campaign from the Battle of Romani 3-5 August 1916 to the capture of Gaza 1-2 November 1917 by way of Al Arish Rafah Khan Yunis Deir al-Balah and Wadi Gaza. Apart from a dozen 'local colour' photographs all relate directly to actions of the ANZAC Mounted Division including snapshots taken in action ambulance and field hospital units troop movements captured Ottoman and German soldiers the daily life of Australian Light Horse men including horse races and surfing and railway and bridging projects.
The lettering at the bottom corner of the cover has led institutional and trade cataloguers to attribute this album to 'Tpr. J. Ellis'. No Ellis appears in the nominal roll of the 7th Light Horse. However one 'T. Ellis' is listed as wounded in action in the official history of the regiment and a search of service records leads us to suggest that 564 Private Thomas Ellis is most likely the compiler and photographer. After enlisting with the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance in December 1914 he served at Gallipoli. Attached to the 7th Light Horse Regiment also part of the 2nd Light Horse Brigade in August 1916 he was wounded in action soon after a gunshot wound to the neck before returning to active duty with the 7th Light Horse until the middle of 1918 at which point he returned to the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance. The preponderance of photographs showing ambulance units would seem to support this attribution.
The album must have been compiled for presentation to fellow Light Horse men in a period of leave most likely in Egypt between February and April 1919 or possibly afterwards in London. Comparison with other examples suggests that Ellis had identical tooling applied to a range of similar but not identical commercial albums accounting for the different appearance of the covers and mounts in other copies we have traced the mounts in this example have a Vidalon-lès-Annonay watermark. All copies have 'Sent by Name' inscribed on the front pastedown; although this is in a uniform hand it is not written by Ellis see his digitised service record for examples of his handwriting.
Provenance: 'Sent by Lcpl. S. Vohr' is inscribed in ink on the front pastedown of this copy. Sophus Carl Vohr of Jamestown South Australia enlisted at Morphettville on 19 August 1914; his service number - 32 - is a reflection of his very early enlistment. A Gallipoli veteran he saw action in the Middle East with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment. Privately Published hardcover

The volume also having the notable rapports and notes by Arago Biot Ampere exhibiting the famous controversy over the subject."This concept of transverse waves met with the greatest hostility from the scientists of the day who could not imagine an extremely fluid and rarified ether which at the same time possessed the mechanical properties of a rigid body. Even Arago admitted that he could not follow the exuberant engineer in his ideas. But Fresnel was convinced that at last he had the key to many mysteries and with his model of waves he gave a full clarification of the phenomena of polarization. With insuperable precision he explained a long series of extremely complicated experiments such as those of chromatic polarization that Arago himself had discovered by chance in 1811 and which the followers of Newton could not explain in spite of all their efforts. Following this line Fresnel reached the synthesis which is his masterpiece.we must recall the final interpretation that he gave of the famous phenomenon of partial reflection by transparent surfaces that simple phenomenon which until then had puzzled Grimaldi Newton and Huygens and which in Malus's experiments had unexpectedly acquired a special importencee as it had been compared to the great mystery of double refraction."Ronchi "The Nature of Light" p. 255 ff. hardcover

His methods of calculation utilized the principles of both Huygens and Young and he summed the effects due to different portions of the same primary wave-front. Experiments and Calculations relative to physical Optics. 1804 - which gives the first really convincing evidence that the fringes are produced by interference of light waves and giving the experimental demonstrations of the general law of Interference. These importent demonstrations served as the experimental basis for the wave hypothesis of light. - In his two first papers "On the Theory of Light and Colours" 1802 and "An account of Some Cases of the Production of Colours not hitherto described" 1802 - he only partially announced his principle of Interference and the statement of it in "An Account." was entirely hypothetical and not experimental. Magie. Source Book in Physics gives extracts of this paper and a later paper under the head: Discovery of the interference of light pp.308-15.Young also shows here that diffraction effects can be explained by the interference law."The experimental basis for the wave hypothesis of light as Young formulated it was interference. The fact has already been observed that two trauins of water waves may be so superposed that in certain regions the throughs of one train will lie continuously on the crests of another thereby producing zero disturbance.Destryctive interference is said to occur between the two trains of waves in the former case and constructivee interference in lthe latter. Similarly two sound waves may be so combined as to produce alternate regions of silence and enhanced sound. The phenomenon of interference of which the forgoing are familiar examples is easely comprehensible in the case of combining waves but would be utterly incomprehensible in the case of combining streams of particles. So when Young demonstrated that two beams of light could under properly controlled conditions be made to combine in such a way as to produce alternate regions of darkness and light he was rightly considered to have identified in light a characteristic property of waves." Lloyd Taylor in: Physics. The Pioneer Science. p. 511.Of the three papers published in the years 1802-04 the last is the most importent as it gives the experimental demonstrations of the interference of light. Ruth Light Braun was born in Brooklyn NY and studied art at Cooper Union. After a period during which she did drawings for the New Yorker and book illustrations she studied for two years with Winold Reiss. She adopted the methods which Reiss used to portray ethnic subjects to doing portraits of Jews in New York. She also did genre scenes of Jew ish life in the city during the 1920s and 1930s and it is likelty that this scene of women cleaning in what may be an office building is one of these. Later she spent time in Palestine but returned to the U.S. after the death of her first husband. She remariied and she and her hisband formed a catering business in Washington DC. In later life she resumed her art career in Florida. unknown
