Original report covers bound in the whole bound in red buckram cloth binding with gold lettering on the spine panel. Stamps of the Reform Club periodically throughout some browning generally good copies. 10582Ancient Lamp from Judea circa 2nd century AD and later. 3" x 2". Lamp has a molded design in discus a sheep among other objects with dark red to brown slip. The lamp is inside a plastic display box with a wooden base. Oil lamps were made of common pottery in the ancient world people did not have much light at nights most homes would contain several oil lamps because olive oil was in abundance and therefore not expensive. There was also an oven that provided a little bit of light but the oil lamps were the main source of light in every home. In excellent condition.<br/><br/>Lamps appear in the Torah and other Jewish sources as a symbol of "lighting" the way for the righteous the wise and for love and other positive values. While fire was often described as being destructive light was given a positive spiritual meaning. The oil lamp and its light were important household items and this may explain their symbolism. Oil lamps were used for many spiritual rituals. unknown books

An in-depth look at one of the US's most extensive collections of African art within the context of the the works' original rituals. I give this book 5 stars because it's clear the author charted his own path here and it makes for an interesting book on African art. There are other books with higher quality photos slicker paper that are more "artistic" coffee table material. I love them.not all but often if they aren't reprinting the same common photo examples. Howeverhere the author really takes you into the village introduces you to the tribal members and you vicariously participate in the dance. It's not only interesting but it's a record of a way of life that may not be around too much longer. You'll even find out what a heddle pully is and why it's important.
