pp. xii, 452. Small 8vo. Modern library binding. XLib. Manuscript ownership of (Captain:) H. Evans, Ship Light Brigade, 1871. The Ship Light Brigade was famous for it's sailings to India, Australia, and New Zealand. "In addition to the great beauty of her model and rig, the Light Brigade was interesting from the fact that she brought out a large number of troops during the Maori War. Of 1214 tons burden, she was built in 1855 at Boston, USA by that celebrated builder Donald McKay and when she left the launching ways her name was Ocean Telegraph." Competition Wallah: A hybrid of English and Hindustani, applied in modern Anglo-Indian colloquial to members of the Civil Service who have entered it by the competitive system first introduced in 1856. The phrase was probably the invention of one of the older or Haileybury members of the same service. These latter, whose nominations were due to interest, and who were bound together by the intimacies and esprit de corps of a common college, looked with some disfavor upon the children of Innovation. The name was readily taken up in India, but its familiarity in England is probably due in great part to the "Letters of a Competition-Wallah", written by Sir G.O. Trevelyan.
