Questo libro ripercorre la storia delle molte analogie che, fin dalla fine del diciottesimo secolo, sono state tracciate tra la biologia e le arti applicate (con particolare rilievo all'architettura). Le prime analogie riguardano la classificazione: metodi di classificazione tratti dalla botanica e dalla zoologia sono applicati alla storia dell'architettura. Viene poi sviluppata una analogia anatomica, in cui la struttura ingegneristica delle costruzioni è paragonata allo scheletro animale. Vi è inoltre una analogia ecologica, la quale considera il conformarsi del design di un oggetto al suo scopo funzionale, equivalente all'adattamento di piante ed animali all'ambiente in cui essi vivono. Infine, vi è una analogia 'darwiniana', o evolutiva, che spiega il design di oggetti aventi utilità pratica e di costruzioni, particolarmente nelle società primitive e nella tradizione artigianale, come il risultato del susseguirsi di ripetute repliche (corrispondenti all'eredità), nel corso delle quali si verificherebbero lievi cambiamenti ad ogni stadio (variazioni"), che sarebbero poi sottoposti a prove di collaudo quando l'oggetto viene adoperato ('selezione'). Tra i teorici dell'architettura presi in esame, sono inclusi Durand, Viollet-le-Duc, Semper, Sullivan, Wright, Le Corbusier, Ozenfante Alexander. Una certa attenzione viene anche rivolta alla analogia biologica applicata allo studio della cultura materiale in archeologia e antropologia, come nel lavoro di Pitt-Rivers, Balfour, e di coloro che hanno applicato le teorie evoluzioniste ai vari campi della cultura, come Spencer, Morgane Tylor. Il libro si propone di chiarire alcune questioni che sono attualmente argomento di ampio dibattito nel campo dell'architettura e del design. Cosa è stato sbagliato nel movimento moderno? Qual è il ruolo appropriato della scienza e di un approccio scientifico nei confronti del design? Quali sono i rapporti tra le tecniche ingegneristiche nel design e gli aspetti culturali e simbolici? II libro sarà d'interesse per gli architetti, gli ingegneri, gli studiosi di storia dell'arte e per i designers, ed anche, più generalmente, per gli archeologi, gli antropologi, i biologi, gli studiosi di storia delle idee e gli studiosi di storia delle scienze e della tecnologia.
