A truly beautiful suite of plates depicting the national ball costumes of countries such as Hungary Switzerland and Austria. Andre Leon Larue known professionally as Mansion was the son of a portrait painter. He worked predominantly as a miniaturist creating portraits of such figures as Empress Josephine 1763-1814 and Napoleon I 1769-1821. However he also had a celebrated career as an aquatinter producing such notable suites of costume plates as Fancy Dress Ball 1831 and the present suite National Ball Costumes. The artist's soft modeling of the fabrics and the delicate detailing of the character's faces all recall the artist's training in miniature painting. <br /> <br /> This series of ball costumes when issued was reviewed by The Spectator where it was described as following on from a 'series of superb costumes' entitled "Fancy Ball Dresses" of which we have had occasion to speak in terms of admiration and with whose style most of our readers are familiar having seen the plates in the prire shop windows for these few months past. The same clever artist who is a Frenchman by the way has commenced a new series of female costumes denominated "National Ball Costumes" which are got up in the same splendid style of colouring and are equally distinguished for richness of effect and costliness of materials and ornament' The Spectator 3 December 1831 pp. 20-21.<br /> <br /> Bobins IV 1248; Not in Colas Hiler or Lipperheide. 1894519168B.T. Batsford London 1894. 1st Edition. Unframed Photograph Print. Very Good Condition. Moreton Corbet's Elizabethan Facade begun c.1579 by Robert Corbet shows Italianate influence; damaged during the Civil War. Charles Latham was one of the most influential architectural photographers of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods renowned for his evocative images of country houses and formal gardens across Britain and Italy. His work helped define the visual language of architectural publishing and preservation. His first major commission was for J. Alfred Gotch's Architecture of the Renaissance in England 1894 from which this photograph is taken where his collotype plates captured the texture and grandeur of Elizabethan and Jacobean houses with remarkable clarity. Latham later helped shape the visual identity of Country Life magazine which we always have in stock photographing both historic estates and newly built homes. His images became central to the magazine's appeal combining editorial elegance with technical innovation in print reproduction. Each of Charles Latham's architectural photographs captures a singular moment of craftsmanship patronage or domestic ambition from heraldic chimney-pieces to formal garden fronts. Whether collegiate civic or aristocratic these buildings speak to the stylistic confidence of their age. Many remain inhabited studied or preserved today making each image not just a historical record but a quietly resonant portrait of continuity. Published in 1894 this fine Victorian-period image has been carefully removed from Gotch's monumental work. Printed in Leipzig Germany by Sinsel & Co. on thick cream-coloured paper this image reflects the firm's hallmark clarity and tonal depth featuring the building's name in sepia ink below a ruled border with Latham's beautifully composed black-and-white photograph taking centre place.
