ISBN: 960-87150-1-6.</p><p>The life of Manuel Panselenos the great Byzantine painter of Protaton church at Karyes Mount Athos is between myth and reality. He lived in 14th century a time of conflict where while the state's political and economic power declines letters and arts reach the highest point of glory yet drawing elements from the ancient Greek tradition. His work as it survives in Protaton is representative of the whole Paleologean era and of the so-called Macedonian "school" of hagiography whose center was the city of Thessalonike. The intellectual and artistic life of the city reaches that time at high levels whith a leading role in the entire Balkan area. The work of Panselenos has a rare quality in the performance of color organic body composition and psychological performance forms all of which add to the style of a drama inherent in realistic tones.
