Nice Four Page Letter By Okey Discussing And Including His Only Etching A Self Portrait Which He Made In Paris. John Clark "Jack" Okey June 3 1889 - January 8 1963 Was An American Art Director. He Was Raised In Los Angeles And Attended The Harvard School For Boys. After Leaving He Was Given Instruction In Art By His Uncle The California Artist J. Bond Francisco. While He Was In His Early 20S He Traveled To Paris With His Friend Stanton Macdonald Wright And Spent Several Years There Studying Art. Around The Time Of His Marriage In 1913 He Became Involved In The Nascent Film Industry In The Los Angeles Area And Was Involved In The Design And Construction Of Some Of The Earliest Studios There. He Continued In The Film Industry As An Art Director Until His Retirement In 1959. In The Mid-1930S He Spent Several Years In England Working For Alexander Korda Designing Studios For Him. After His Return To The United States He Spent The Remainder Of His Active Career Working For Rko. He Was Nominated For Two Academy Awards For Art Direction 1929 And 1944 But His Best Known Film Is "It'S A Wonderful Life". <br/> <br/> Jack Okey unknown

A Study For His Long Beach School Murals Under The Wpa. Napolitano Studied At Chouinard And Otis To 1925 Worked With Herman Sachs And Later On His Own Doing Architectural Murals Los Angeles City Hall The Miami Beach Biltmore And Many Prominent Buildings And Estates. He Then Studied Ceramics In Ny And Mural Painting In Germany 1929-1931. After Returning To Los Angeles In 1933 Napolitano Began Working In All Media Including Many Murals For The Wpa Where He Met Armitage. Photograph with annotation in manuscript pencil on the verso noting the name of German photographer Harry Shunk. Also included are two different vintage programs for the event.<br /> <br /> "Batcolumn" was commissioned by the US General Services Administration and depicts a giant baseball bat constructed in latticework COR-TEN steel and painted gray standing on its knob. The dedication ceremony was held on April 14 1977 and included remarks by Mayor of Chicago Michael A. Bilandic and National Endowment for the Arts Deputy Chairman Michael Straight.<br /> <br /> Photograph 10 x 8 inches. One program 8.25 x 8.5 inches the other 8 x 5.25 inches. Laid in archivally is Forrest's obituary. <br/><br/>This Pulitzer-nominated novel had a first printing of only 1500 copies. On Christmas Day 1992 an electrical fire in the publisher's office damaged all the remaining copies of which about ten smoke-damaged copies were salvaged. Forrest was an English Professor at Northwestern University. He inscribed this copy "Love to "Connie Reuveni / good luck with your bookstore / Best Wishes / Leon Forrest." Connie owned the Booknook Parnassus used bookstore in Evanston so this is not one of the smoke-damaged copies. Critic John Cawelti called this "The ULYSSES of Chicago's South Side." It covers a week in February 1966. in the life of Joubert Jones and "as a way of re-creating the spirit of those times . Forget the other hype. This is a legitimately rare modern first edition ! Blurbed by 2 winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature Saul Bellow and Toni Morrison. Cover art by sculptor Richard Hunt.
