"Hans Wunderlich is a geologist who happened to be in Crete in 1970, when he took the opportunity of visiting Sir Arthur Evan's celebrated reconstruction of the so-called Palace of King Minos at Knossos - the legendary labyrinth where Theseus once defeated the dreaded Minotaur. This chance visit drew him into one of the greatest archaeological mysteries of all time, for one contradiction struck him after another in the 'established' interpretations of the Minoan culture. His geologist's eye found clues that the early archaeologists had missed, the technical man asked questions to which no-one seemed to have the answer. He soon concluded that what he was gazing at was not a palace at all, but something more sombre and perhaps even more significant. This book is the author's attempt to resolve the paradoxes that have obsessed the archaeological world ever since Evan's spectacular find." An interesting theory ."that the Palace of King Minos was not the bustling centre of gay courtly life but was, instead, a necropolis - a city of the dead" English translation by Richard Windsor. 368p. illus. diagrs. maps. bibliography. index. Small blank sticker to rear wrap. Very light shelfwear. ; 21pp, illustrated. At the Swedish excavations of the Etruscan acropolis at Acquarossa some pieces of burned clay from a house wall were recovered. They contained several enclosed carbonized cereal grains and numerous grain impressions. Since traces of straw and twigs were also visible in the pieces, plant material had obviously been mixed into the clay when the house was built. Some cereal grains had also been included, which were carbonized when the clay was burnt. The find belonged to zone H in the excavation area and derived from the later part of the 7th century or the first half of the 6th century B. C. By the excavator of zone H, Mrs. Leni Wendt, the material was placed at the disposal of the author for analysis of the botanical elements. This report deals with the cereals that could be identified. Some accompanying weeds are also included. ; Studies in Mediterranean Archaeology and Literature. Pocket-Book 86; 21 pages

For 30 years Professor George E. Mylonas directed excavations at Mycenae for Washington University in St. Louis and the Archaeological Society of Athens. (1951-1981) Thirty years of excavation have brought about the need for a Guide book such as this, which contains the latest results of the archaeologists' work at Mycenae. The illustrations and the many plans it contains will, I hope, make easy the study of the ruins which at first glance seem labyrinthine. In Part I of the Guide I give a full description of the remains on the acropolis of Mycenae; in Part II, an account of the tombs and houses to be found outside the acropolis. In Part III, I offer a concise account of the history and legends of Mycenae, of the excavations and of the excavators whose work has made possible the study of the Mycenaean civilization. In this way a rounded picture of the site and its historic role in the affairs of Greece may be obtained from reading the Guide and inspection of the site.It is hoped that the visit to the City of Agamemnon will prove a memorable experience for the reader. 80p. illus (+ Fold-out plans) Name of previous owner, else fine.
