ABE-8959041344Penguin Classics London The Big Sleep has been a popular Penguin issue for many years and is an undoubtedly enduring classic of its type. Here at last we have a PERFECT Limited Edition worthy of a great genre setting work and a first edition thus. Penguin asked the brilliant leather designer Bill Amberg to design a six book set. Amberg chose vegetable tanned buffalo skin from 'fallen animals' - which means they died from natural causes. The skins were processed in a totally ecological way where the water is recycled after filtering through reed beds. The resultant leather is tough and aesthetic and like all great leather bindings can only improve with handling. Amberg has used Yapp binding which is a form where the leather overlaps the exposed edges of the text block. Yapp bindings are usually limp with rounded corners and are used mainly for devotional books so the leather edges protect the book as they soften and envelop the pages. All the edges are beautifully sewn. Additionally there is a tethered bookmark in the same material which also bears the book's title. At the base of the leather spine is a blind embossed Penguin logo. This is a truly delightful production and comes with a special Penguin tissue wrapping inside a blond card box. The box is then secured with a beautiful paper sash. Inside the book is a paper slip that reveals the details of the production process. Sure to be a much coveted series this is the first printing denoted by the '1' on the copyright page. Only 1000 copies were issued of each title in this superb leather binding which is the reason these beautiful and RARE luxurious books are now so eagerly sought by collectors.
