With a lithographed frontispiece. 2 76 8 pp. Very rare and remarkable catalogue of artworks exhibited in Amsterdam to raise funds for the Dutch army. It lists 1985 artworks not only paintings but all kinds of crafts: miniatures drawings engravings lithographs glass painting etc. All works were to be sold in a lottery to raise funds for the 10-day Campaign Tiendaagse veldtocht on 2-12 August 1831 by King Willem I in order to suppress the Belgian uprising. The catalogue includes a lithographed allegorical frontispiece depicting the nation in the form of a bust of King Willem I supported by art. This was designed by court artist Nicolaas Pieneman 1809-1860 and is accompanied by a poem by Jan de Breet. The present copy is the second expanded and final edition published shortly after the first. It lists all the artworks including the later additions. The first edition lists only 1706 items while the present second edition lists 1985. The frontispiece was slightly revised for the 2nd edition. The catalogue is very rare the Dutch union catalogue NCC lists only 1 copy Rijksmuseum 2nd ed. WorldCat also records a copy in the Frick collection. 190132177Buffalo: The Courier Co 1901. First Edition. Soft cover. Good. Bound soft cover cut in the shape of a Buffalo head. Front and rear covers are a color lithograph illustration of a Buffalo head. Title in light blue on the front cover. Spine is backed by a thin piece of black linen tape. Light edge wear to the covers. A small scuff mark on the rear cover and a small chip to the tip of the Buffalo horn on the front cover. Small pin hole pierces the covers and text possibly once threaded. <br /> <br /> Souvenir autograph booklet contains 40 leaves of black and white photograph scenes of the Pan-Am Exhibition on the front sides. 62 inscriptions and autographs written on the blank versos of 37 of 40 leaves 80 pages. The original owner appears to be Emilie Hommel of Sandusky Ohio. Many of the inscriptions are signed to her. A later owner inscription in pencil written on the blank verso of the front cover: "Among my Collection John G. Knauer sp. 1412 Erie Blvd Sandusky O Nov. 11/1955" 62 counted autographs and inscriptions from vendors and attendees of the Exposition dated from late October to November 2 1901. Locations signed from contributors include the States of New York Connecticut Delaware Minnesota Nebraska Illinois Indiana Michigan Florida Georgia Virginia California New York Ohio and North Carolina. Other places signed include Washington D. C. Mexico City Ontario Toronto and Africa. The inscription from Africa is written in half English and half Arabic languages from "Fort National Algerie Africa". Another inscription is written in the Spanish language. The fair occupied 350 acres 1.4 km2 of land on the western edge of what is now Delaware Park extending from Delaware Avenue to Elmwood Avenue and northward to Great Arrow Avenue.The exposition is most remembered because President William McKinley was shot by an anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Temple of Music on September 6 1901. Requa 1881-1941 famed San Diego architect was one of the founders of the very influential Requa & Jackson architectural firm and were the architects of choice in San Diego and Los Angeles during the booming 1920s who developed the “Southern California Architecture†style drawing upon the historical architecture of the Colonial Mexico the Pueblos of the Southwest and the Moorish features from Spain and North Africa was the Master Architect for the California Pacific International Exposition of 1935-36 and preserved the buildings which are still evident in Balboa Park. Buckman 1913-1995 who at the time was stationed on the USS Northampton CL/CA 26 US Navy Cruiser sunk later in 1942 at the Battle of Tassafaronga repelling Japanese from reinforcing troops on Guadalcanal. First edition of this scarce and beautifully rendered pictorial map celebrating the very successful California Pacific International Exposition held in San Diego over two years at the depths of the Great Depression to revive the Southern California economy which featured a number of unusual concessions and exhibits such as the Gold Gulch Lost Continent of Mu the Zoro Garden Nudist Colony and the “One Ton Mechanical Man.†Several of the exhibits used at the recently closed Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago 1933-1934 were re-used for the CPIE. This map reminiscent of the work of Jo Mora looks Eastward from a high point above the Pacific Ocean depicting San Diego from La Jolla to Oneonta and inland up to Cuyamaca Dam. Many of the buildings developed the architect Requa’s 1881-1941 “Southern California Architecture†style drawing upon the historical architecture of the Colonial Mexico the Pueblos of the Southwest and the Moorish features from Spain and North Africa and preserved the popular buildings which are still evident in Balboa Park. Bloodgood 1896-1989 was an illustrator cartoonist and map maper who produced a substantial body of pictorial maps from 1935-1968 for Shell Oil and the Pic-Tour Guide Series with this one being distributed from the Shell Building exhibit at the CPIE.
