First edition of these nicely executed photogravure images of the magnificent Columbian Exposition in 1893. The historic World’s Fair which ran almost six months with grounds and gardens laid out by Fredrick Olmsted covering 630 acres and a Midway skyline dominated by the 250-foot Ferris wheel designed by George Ferris. These photogravures depict the Machinery Hall Admin Building and Court of Honor the Lagoon The Art Palace Woman’s Building the Japanese Hooden Palace on Wooded Island The Krupp Gunworks building and even the Monastery of “La Rabida.†Adolph Wittemann and his brother Herman began working as printers in New York in 1867 and first started printing books and postcards under the Albertype name in 1887. Adolph acted not only as agent finding customers for their services but taking photographs across the country to be made into postcards. First edition of this surprisingly scarce report which served to provide the final history and financial analysis of the 1893 Columbian Worlds Fair. Higinbotham provides numerous tables explaining expenses amount of visitors to the fair specific exhibition costs final disposition of exhibits and much more. Of particular interest is that this copy still retains the original pictorial map Birds-Eye view based upon earlier versions and issued with this report. The pictorial map features a numbered list of attractions listed below which carefully correspond to those depicted in the map such as the “Ferris Wheel†erected by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. as the centerpiece to the Midway Plaisance. Along with the immense Ferris Wheel which towered over the Exposition there also are images of the Street in Cairo Egyptian Wedding Sudanese villagers Egyptian belly-dancers the Chinese theatre and the Alaskan Kwakiutl Indians together with their totem polls and native dress. A group of very scarce mounted souvenir albumen photographs shot at the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893 when patrons carrying small Kodak cameras were required to pay $ 2.00 license fee to bring a camera onto the grounds and no cameras or tripods able to shoot larger than 4 x 5 in. images were allowed. Most visitors bought the printed photo album versions wealthier ones would buy entire souvenir photo albums filled with Arnold images and yet others could buy them as individual mounted shots depicting their favorite or preferred venues. The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair ran almost six months featured grounds and gardens laid out by Fredrick Olmsted covering 630 acres and a Midway skyline dominated by the 250-foot Ferris wheel designed by George Ferris which could carry 2160 patrons when fully loaded. The “On the Midway†photo shows the Ferris wheel still under construction which much of the structure still clad in scaffolding. Others depict throngs of visitors individual exhibits and some Buildings just newly finished such as the U.S. Government Building featuring scaffolding off to the side for future installation to be completed. Arnold 1844-1927 was prior to the Fair an obscure Buffalo NY photographer who had been initially contracted to photograph the construction of the 1893 World’s Fair but proved to be an excellent architectural photographer so so became the Chief of the Fair’s Dept. of Photography. First edition of this massive compilation of addresses and reports presented at the Colombian Exposition. Of particular interest is the amount devoted to eastern religions including Hinduism Buddhism Bramo-Somaj Shintoism Confucianism Zoroastrianism as well as Islam. The editor has included papers on the role of Buddhism in Siam and Japan the development of Confucianism extracts from the Koran and more. Of particular interest are the papers presented by African-Americans on the “American Negroe’s†role in Christianity including addresses by Bishop Arnett of the African Methodist Ethiopian Church as well as Fannie Barrier Williams on the “Religious Duty to the Negro†and “The Catholic Church and the Negro Race†by J.R. Slattery of Baltimore. Fannie Williams was a vociferous proponent of education for African-American women writing that in terms “of employment colored women bear a distressing burden of mean and unreasonable discrimination . . . colored women can find no employment in this free America.†As African-Americans were almost entirely excluded from the 1893 Columbian Exposition these papers and addresses offer just a few of the efforts by the Black community to engage with attendees. The scarce Paris Universal Exposition edition of J.P. Whitney’s early title on the silver mines of Colorado. Whitney a wealthy sportsman from Boston with investments in Colorado traveled as the sole commissioner from Colorado to the Paris Universal Exposition in an effort to entice foreign investment in the mining industry which was suffering from a poor reputation as the costs of extraction grew higher. Whitney had published this title in pamphlet form a year earlier. Whitney shipped his own collection of Colorado minerals to France where it was the most extensive of any of the North American regions to be displayed receiving a gold medal from Napoleon III. A new title on Colorado minerals Colorado in the United States of America: Schedule of Ores Contributed by Sundry Persons to the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867 With Some Information about the Region and its Resources. Whitney also brought with him copies of his pamphlet in a special hardcover edition which we offer here. This is the second example we find on the market. A fantastic chromolithograph birds-eye promotional trade card issued by the Clark & Co. Hardware from Buffalo New York who embraced the international flavor of the 1876 Centennial by advertising in four different languages. Potsdamer & Co. operated from the mid 1870’s until Ketterlinus acquired the firm in 1885 and has as stage framing the miniature birds-eye the Machinery Hall Government Building Agricultural Building Art Gallery Women’s Pavilion and the expansive Main Building. One oblong atlas folio hand-coloured lithograph sized 25 x 20.5 in. still retaining fairly wide borders printing below centered image colour-tinted border to image some very minor age toning dustsoiling still an excellent copy preserved in the original quarter-sawn oak wood frame 33.5 x 25.5 in. retaining the original glass newly backed in archival foam core framed w/ archival matting. First edition of this impressive first edition birds-eye view of the buildings and sites Centennial International Exhibition with the fairgrounds set above the Schuykill River. This view depicts the Exposition before it was completed and the Halls featured include the Main Building Machinery Hall Memorial Hall Horticultural Hall and Agricultural Hall. Once the construction was complete Toudy issued another version with fuller buildings as well as some changes to the foreground and center of the image. Toudy fl. 1865-1878 first established with William Toudy his lithography firm at 503-505 Chestnut and later merged with Geroge Wl. Ward & Co. in 1872 lasting less than 2 years. Henry became the sole owner by 1875 and were well known for their atlases maps and city views and he worked on several Stone & Stewart County Atlases from 1866-1877 as well as many of the Mid-Atlantic general surveys. They also managed to outlast a lawsuit over a print based on the drawing by Hermann Schwarzmann architect of the Centennial grounds entitled “Bird’s Eye View†after copyrighting this image in 1875. First edition variant issue of this scarce birds-eye view of the buildings and sites at the first World’s Fair in the United States celebrating the Centennial. This depicts the trees grass shrubs pedestrians horse-drawn carriages and walking paths with labels below for the Horticultural Hall Main Exhibition Building Memorial Hall Agricultural Hall Ladies Pavilion Machinery Hall and others. These beautiful birds-eye views were presented to subscribers of the “Centennial History†by sales agents who were also sent extra circulars and liberal commissions as indicated in the margins. These were apparently issued in different sizes and formats with the Huntington hand-coloured copy containing all the text including the imprint at the lower fore-edge and both the Huntington and American Antiquarian Society copies have smaller margins. Bourquin 1808-1897 was a Swiss-American pioneering Philadelphia lithographer who specialized in county maps and atlases but also was known for his innovative lithography and by 1876 maintained between 6 and 20 skilled lithographers to produce portraits and prints. First edition of this wonderfully illustrated depiction of the furnishings artworks silver American cut glass stained-glass windows and more all displayed at the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia. Following the lead of the 1851 & 1862 Exhibitions the 1853-54 New York Exhibition and others the Centennial served as a vast space for thousands of vendors and manufacturers to display their wares. Many American artists were featured and these World’s Fairs served as key influences on designers decorators artists architects and the arts. First edition of this wonderfully woodblock printed souvenir linen scarf for the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition held in Philadelphia that year. The large lozenge medallions feature the Main Exhibition Building which covered 21.5 acres constructed of wood & iron framework on 672 stone piers; the Horticultural Hall epitomized floral achievement in gardening and was designed in a Moorish style to be a permanent tribute to the Crystal Palace of London’s 1851 Great Exhibition -- it survived until severely damaged by Hurricane Hazel in 1954; and finally the Art Gallery now known as Memorial Hall and the only large exhibit building still standing on the Exposition site. The Memorial Hall was designed by Herman Schwarzmann in a beaux-arts style and reopened in 1877 as the Pennsylvania Museum of Art and included originally the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art.
