One oblong atlas folio hand-coloured lithograph sized 26 x 20.5 in. still retaining fairly wide borders printing above & below centered image w/ hand-coloured border some minor toning & aging from original backing minor tidemark to upper left corner edgewear slight tears very minor predation scuffing to blank right margin still a nice strong image retaining some of the original colouring. First edition variant issue of this scarce birds-eye view of the buildings and sites at the first World’s Fair in the United States celebrating the Centennial. This depicts the trees grass shrubs pedestrians horse-drawn carriages and walking paths with labels below for the Horticultural Hall Main Exhibition Building Memorial Hall Agricultural Hall Ladies Pavilion Machinery Hall and others. These beautiful birds-eye views were presented to subscribers of the “Centennial History†by sales agents who were also sent extra circulars and liberal commissions as indicated in the margins. These were apparently issued in different sizes and formats with the Huntington hand-coloured copy containing all the text including the imprint at the lower fore-edge and both the Huntington and American Antiquarian Society copies have smaller margins. Bourquin 1808-1897 was a Swiss-American pioneering Philadelphia lithographer who specialized in county maps and atlases but also was known for his innovative lithography and by 1876 maintained between 6 and 20 skilled lithographers to produce portraits and prints. A fantastic chromolithograph birds-eye promotional trade card issued by the Clark & Co. Hardware from Buffalo New York who embraced the international flavor of the 1876 Centennial by advertising in four different languages. Potsdamer & Co. operated from the mid 1870’s until Ketterlinus acquired the firm in 1885 and has as stage framing the miniature birds-eye the Machinery Hall Government Building Agricultural Building Art Gallery Women’s Pavilion and the expansive Main Building. A photographic record of a young American man's tour of Europe and the Paris Exposition accompanied by many beautiful street images of Paris.<br /> <br /> The silver gelatin prints of Paris by the unidentified photographer include wonderful images of Notre Dame cathedral the Eiffel Tower the Opera House Toreador Palace the Church of the Madeleine the Champs Esys and the Arc de Triumph. There are many street scenes including the Rue de Rival L'Avenue de loper Place de la Republic monuments and architecture.<br /> <br /> The tour begins in Scotland and includes a departure at the train station wonderful shot of the train and passengers waiting on the platform as well as thatched roof cottages and gardens castles Edinburgh and London. It concludes with images of the main square in Brussels the Belgian country side and Holland including the iconic windmill shot. The final shot is on board ship the photographer with 2 fellow travelers looking very proud of himself.<br /> <br /> The album 8 x 6". Images 3 x 3 1/2" loosely inserted into card stock mounts. Very good condition; previous owner book plate Michael E. Kate. Three quarter leather and buckram boards the spine leather lacking but the binding intact. hardcover

An original pen and ink drawing showing Sir Edgar Boehm's 1834 - 1890 statue 'Young Bull and Herdsman' on a large plinth at the foot of the grand staircase at the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition of 1888. <br /> <br /> A stylishly-dressed Victorian crowd of exhibition viewers strolls about the great hall with the statue on a large plinth highlighted with white accents. With the title penned below the image. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm 1834 - 1890 is recognized for his colossal statues including one of Queen Victoria executed in marble 1869 for Windsor Castle the monument of the duke of Kent in St. George's Chapel the statue of Carlyle on the Thames embankment at Chelsea and the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington at Hyde Park Corner. Boehm is also listed as a British exhibitor in the Reports of the United States Commissioners to the Centennial International Exhibition at Melbourne 1888 p111.<br /> <br /> The Young Bull and Herdsman was acquired by the Melbourne Art Gallery and Museum and was then gifted to the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria where it is today outside the RASV offices in the show grounds.<br /> <br /> Unsigned with a small circular mark roughly at center of drawing and a closed tear through the caption but not affecting the drawing; mounted on an album page. 9 3/4 x 8 1/2" unknown
