Five original pen & ink sketches hand-coloured and photostat original artwork by Berson for â€œReggieâ€™s No-Good Birdâ€ published in 1967 and written by Nellie Burchardt.

This set of original illustrations provide splendid specimens for childrenâ€™s book publishing during the Civil Rights era. â€œReggieâ€™s No-Good Birdâ€ is set against the backdrop of â€œwhen the biggest troublemaker in the class injures a baby Blue Jay and decides to care for it and raise it he finds himself without the time or interest to get into trouble.â€ And the illustrations depict young Reggie with his African-American compatriot assessing the injuries to the young â€œNo-Good Birdâ€ and later setting it free. These original art work compositions were rendered for the Franklin Watts edition and repeated with the â€œWeekly Reader Booksâ€ edition book club but were changed to a different cover art illustrator for the 1970 Archway paperback.Berson 1926-1986 was born in Los Angeles served at the end of World War II and was an avid traveler. He graduated from UCLA with a BA in 1953 and spent most of the next two decades traveling in Europe studying art in Paris and then living in Spain France Italy Yugoslavia Turkey North Africa and after 1958 together with his fellow artist & wife Paula Winter Berson 1929-2003. His first illustrated book was â€œLoretta Mason Pottsâ€ by Mary Chase in 1958. He is perhaps best-remembered for his whimsical fairy tale creatures in his Henry Possum Mabel Wattsâ€™s â€œThe King and the Whirlybirdâ€ â€œMother Goose Treasuryâ€ â€œRaminagrobis and the Miceâ€ â€œKing Midas and the Golden Touchâ€ and many others. Handwritten and Illustrated Family History

1950D7341Worsthorne Lancashire c. 1950. Hardcover. Fine. Black white red and gilt decorative Christmas paper over boards; 185 x 273 mm; pp. 83 handwritten in ink with more than 20 drawings and watercolors including vignettes decorative flourishes and full-page scenes. A florid orderly feminine hand records a very personal account of her childhood memories and family history composed in hindsight and lamenting "the present world. of H. Bombs Nuclear Tests Atomic Secrets Radioactivity planes hurling through the air with deafening noise. The levity of my sketch Wordsorth forgive for like you 'Have I not reason to lament what man has made of man'" She also references "peace time" making it clear that she has some familiarity with war and this is perhaps why the entire volume is a careful balancing act between a retreat to the past told cheerfully as though to a child and a more somber rumination on her present. The artwork is invariably accomplished -- ranging from lovely floral themes animals portraits of children and one of Queen Elizabeth landscapes and family houses to somewhat fantastical renderings of human forms floating in the air. She also carefully draws and colors two pictorial maps of locales she recalls from her youth and tips on 2 photographs b/w silver gelatin prints of her grandmother's shawl and bonnet and 1 photograph of a broadside advertising the auction of her uncle's John Crowther sheep and sheep dogs. John her fathers younger brother died in 1887 after being struck by lightning. The family sells his home Jacksons House in Worsthorne in 1888 and moves north leaving their convent education for the Home Farm of Ormrod House belonging to her great grandmother. Photographs were printed in Cheriton Folkestone. Locations on her maps include the River Douglas Rufford Parbold Lathom House Ormskirk Scarisbrick Hall Ainsdale Birkdale Crossens Greeves Hall and more. Poignant learned and quite beautiful. <br/><br/> hardcover
