Being a vivid description of time and space reflecting the structure of the period in which they were written gives us the opportunity to look at history from a different perspective. In the past traveling was an event in itself. Seas mountains and deserts were crossed new places and people were met. Whether the traveler's writings are long or short from ancient Troia to Troy at the beginning of the 20th century what is written drawn observed and perceived about the city and region are important documents. This book is a study on the evaluation of Troy interpretations in the works written by 100 important travelers who came to the Troy region and each exhibited different characteristics from different perspectives. "An attempt to tell the history of journeys as accurately and fully as can be done in a single volume" It draws on a vast primary source material never before greatly available to researchers. It reflects no point of view other than an academic s obligation to be as objective and fair as possible. It is written to be read as a reference source book by anyone from an academic to a high school student and especially by those in between. Rüstam Aslan was born in 1965 in Sivas Turkey and graduated from the Istanbul University Dept. of Prehistory and obtained his PhD. in 2006 in Prehistoric Archaeology from the University of Tubingen Germany studying with Prof. Dr. Manfred Korfmann. He then started his academic career at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Turkey and currently continues to teach at the University as a professor. Since 1988 he has been a member of the excavations team at Troy and between 2007 and 2011 he directed a survey project on the Troad that focused on recording and mapping the Bronze Age Settlements System around Troy. In 2013 he became Director of the Troy Excavations in northwest Turkey. His recent seminars have dealt with archaeological topography of the Troad and the Archaeology of Troy. He has published over 100 scientific papers and 12 books.

Double Triangle Troas Productions SRL unknown

20249786259820576
Akmed Series in Mediterranean Studies ASMS 6
xvi 458 pp hb b/w and colour ills. in English.

The island of Kekova which gives its name to the region is located between the districts of Demre and Kaş in today's Antalya province situated 1 km offshore from the mainland. Positioned on the ancient Mediterranean maritime trade route the island is approximately 7 km long and 1.6 km wide. The island's rugged and rocky terrain is not suitable for agriculture and significantly limits urban settlement. As a result there are settlements in only three areas of the island. These settlements from west to east are named Tersane Bay Settlement Northern Settlement Sunken City and Lighthouse Settlement. Kekova Island has not seen modern settlement in recent times. As the region is designated both as an archaeological site and a special environmental protection area the ancient settlements on the island have been well preserved. Although protected from human damage today the destructive effects of earthquakes that affected the region in antiquity can still be observed especially along the coastal areas of the island. As a result the harbor areas and coastal structures of the ancient coastal settlements in the Kekova region are now submerged about two meters underwater. The island which had not previously been the subject of comprehensive scientific research features coastal-island settlement characteristics across all three settlement units. Documented structures include: a church/monastery six churches five chapels two baths five fish sauce workshops five wine/olive oil workshops 260 residences two tower farms 107 cisterns five lime kilns three harbors two anchoring areas and 13 piers. Underwater research has documented seven shipwreck sites and 45 amphorae of various types. The structures and finds mentioned above have been categorized under 12 main headings. The island and its shores which display settlement continuity characteristic of a deme village or polikhnion small town show a range of architectural styles from the 4th century BCE to the Early Byzantine period. Amphora finds from underwater research represent a broader time range from the 8th century BCE to the 13th century CE.
Koç University Press hardcover

What is the essence of this ancient faith Is it a religion of peace or war How does Allah differ from the God of Jews and Christians Can an Islamic state be founded on democratic values such as pluralism and human rights A writer and scholar of comparative religions Reza Aslan has earned international acclaim for the passion and clarity he has brought to these questions. In No god but God challenging the “clash of civilizations†mentality that has distorted our view of Islam Aslan explains this critical faith in all its complexity beauty and compassion.Contrary to popular perception in the West Islam is a religion firmly rooted in the prophetic traditions of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. Aslan begins with a vivid account of the social and religious milieu in which the Prophet Muhammad lilved. The revelations that Muhammad received in Mecca and Medina which were recorded in the Quran became the foundation for a radically more egalitarian community the likes of which had never been seen before.Soon after his death the Prophet’s successors set about the overwhelming task of defining and interpreting Muhammad’s message for future generations. Their efforts led to the development of a comprehensive code of conduct that was expected to regulate every aspect of the believer’s life. But this attempt only widened the chasm between orthodox Islam and its two major sects Shiism and Sufism both of which Aslan discusses in rich detail. Finally No god but God examines how in the shadow of European colonialism Muslims developed conflicting strategies to reconcile traditional Islamic values with the social and political realities of the modern world. With the emergence of the Islamic state in the twentieth century this contest over the future of Islam has become a passionate sometimes violent battle between those who seek to enforce a rigid and archaic legal code and those who struggle to harmonize the teachings of the Prophet with contemporary ideals of democracy and human rights. According to Reza Aslan we are now living in the era of “the Islamic Reformation.†No god but God is a persuasive and elegantly written account of the roots of this reformation and the future of Islamic faith.
Random House hardcover
