20249786259820576
Akmed Series in Mediterranean Studies ASMS 6
xvi 458 pp hb b/w and colour ills. in English.

The island of Kekova which gives its name to the region is located between the districts of Demre and Kaş in today's Antalya province situated 1 km offshore from the mainland. Positioned on the ancient Mediterranean maritime trade route the island is approximately 7 km long and 1.6 km wide. The island's rugged and rocky terrain is not suitable for agriculture and significantly limits urban settlement. As a result there are settlements in only three areas of the island. These settlements from west to east are named Tersane Bay Settlement Northern Settlement Sunken City and Lighthouse Settlement. Kekova Island has not seen modern settlement in recent times. As the region is designated both as an archaeological site and a special environmental protection area the ancient settlements on the island have been well preserved. Although protected from human damage today the destructive effects of earthquakes that affected the region in antiquity can still be observed especially along the coastal areas of the island. As a result the harbor areas and coastal structures of the ancient coastal settlements in the Kekova region are now submerged about two meters underwater. The island which had not previously been the subject of comprehensive scientific research features coastal-island settlement characteristics across all three settlement units. Documented structures include: a church/monastery six churches five chapels two baths five fish sauce workshops five wine/olive oil workshops 260 residences two tower farms 107 cisterns five lime kilns three harbors two anchoring areas and 13 piers. Underwater research has documented seven shipwreck sites and 45 amphorae of various types. The structures and finds mentioned above have been categorized under 12 main headings. The island and its shores which display settlement continuity characteristic of a deme village or polikhnion small town show a range of architectural styles from the 4th century BCE to the Early Byzantine period. Amphora finds from underwater research represent a broader time range from the 8th century BCE to the 13th century CE.
Koç University Press hardcover

First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of Martin Parr's finest achievements. The first and only edition. Published in a one-time-only print run of 500 copies as a softcover original only. None of the copies was commercially sold. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by John McAslan and Associates: Oversize tabloid format. Pristine-white softcovers with titles on the cover as issued. Photographs by Martin Parr. Brief text by John McAslan. Printed on pristine-white thick uncoated stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ as issued. Presents Martin Parr's "A8". Some of his most evocatively beautiful photographs ever of a place that is several things simultaneously. "A motorway a dual carriageway and finally a local road connecting Post Glasgow to Greenock Gourock and Dunoon. I grew up there and retain a great affection for the raw and intense beauty of the place. For some time I've wondered how I might express this. So I asked Martin Parr to collaborate on a project to record these towns and the people who live and work there. The result is here: A celebration of life along the A8 corridor" John McAslan . "A8" is a mellowing in the positive sense of Martin Parr's saturated colors and matching astringent sensibility. It shows that the latter does have a more restrained emotional and even sentimental side. The formal use of color a Parr trademark is deployed using a less intense more muted and more subdued palette that people familiar with Parr's work in the same lyrical vein such as "West Bay" will find unexpectedly moving. An absolute "must-have" title for Martin Parr collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the Back Cover by Martin Parr. It is signed directly on the page itself not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great collection. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean crisp and bright. Please note: Published in a print run of 500 copies only. None of the copies was commercially sold. A rare signed copy thus. 28 color plates. The most influential and most important British photographer of our time. A fine collectible copy. SEE ALSO OTHER MARTIN PARR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG. ISBN 0014742853.
JMP Journal paperback
