Being a vivid description of time and space reflecting the structure of the period in which they were written gives us the opportunity to look at history from a different perspective. In the past traveling was an event in itself. Seas mountains and deserts were crossed new places and people were met. Whether the traveler's writings are long or short from ancient Troia to Troy at the beginning of the 20th century what is written drawn observed and perceived about the city and region are important documents. This book is a study on the evaluation of Troy interpretations in the works written by 100 important travelers who came to the Troy region and each exhibited different characteristics from different perspectives. "An attempt to tell the history of journeys as accurately and fully as can be done in a single volume" It draws on a vast primary source material never before greatly available to researchers. It reflects no point of view other than an academic s obligation to be as objective and fair as possible. It is written to be read as a reference source book by anyone from an academic to a high school student and especially by those in between. Rüstam Aslan was born in 1965 in Sivas Turkey and graduated from the Istanbul University Dept. of Prehistory and obtained his PhD. in 2006 in Prehistoric Archaeology from the University of Tubingen Germany studying with Prof. Dr. Manfred Korfmann. He then started his academic career at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Turkey and currently continues to teach at the University as a professor. Since 1988 he has been a member of the excavations team at Troy and between 2007 and 2011 he directed a survey project on the Troad that focused on recording and mapping the Bronze Age Settlements System around Troy. In 2013 he became Director of the Troy Excavations in northwest Turkey. His recent seminars have dealt with archaeological topography of the Troad and the Archaeology of Troy. He has published over 100 scientific papers and 12 books.

Double Triangle Troas Productions SRL unknown

mfh153 bshb 000892 257mnbBrand new book; perfect except for light shelf wear and scratch on back of dust cover.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The bestselling author of Zealot and host of Believer explores humanity's quest to make sense of the divine in this concise and fascinating history of our understanding of God.

In ZealotReza Aslan replaced the staid well-worn portrayal of Jesus of Nazareth with a startling new image of the man in all his contradictions. In his new book Aslan takes on a subject even more immense: God writ large.

In layered prose and with thoughtful accessible scholarship Aslan narrates the history of religion as a remarkably cohesive attempt to understand the divine by giving it human traits and emotions. According to Aslan this innate desire to humanize God is hardwired in our brains making it a central feature of nearly every religious tradition. As Aslan writes "Whether we are aware of it or not and regardless of whether we're believers or not what the vast majority of us think about when we think about God is a divine version of ourselves."

But this projection is not without consequences. We bestow upon God not just all that is good in human nature—our compassion our thirst for justice—but all that is bad in it: our greed our bigotry our penchant for violence. All these qualities inform our religions cultures and governments.

More than just a history of our understanding of God this book is an attempt to get to the root of this humanizing impulse in order to develop a more universal spirituality. Whether you believe in one God many gods or no god at all God: A Human History will challenge the way you think about the divine and its role in our everyday lives.

Praise for God

"Timely riveting enlightening and necessary."—HuffPost

"Tantalizing . . . In No god but God challenging the “clash of civilizations†mentality that has distorted our view of Islam Aslan explains this critical faith in all its complexity beauty and compassion.Contrary to popular perception in the West Islam is a religion firmly rooted in the prophetic traditions of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. The revelations that Muhammad received in Mecca and Medina which were recorded in the Quran became the foundation for a radically more egalitarian community the likes of which had never been seen before.Soon after his death the Prophet’s successors set about the overwhelming task of defining and interpreting Muhammad’s message for future generations. With the emergence of the Islamic state in the twentieth century this contest over the future of Islam has become a passionate sometimes violent battle between those who seek to enforce a rigid and archaic legal code and those who struggle to harmonize the teachings of the Prophet with contemporary ideals of democracy and human rights.
