The original drawing is not present. Extraordinarily prolific Restif 1734-1806 was a rival of the Marquis de Sade and is perhaps best known for the term named after him: retifism or shoe fetishism. In 1775 he published Le Paysan perverti an erotic novel with a moral purpose which was quite successful causing him to follow it with La Paysanne Pervertie 1784. Tall octavo: 189 p. Light tanning. Uncommon cartographic promotional for this early 20th-century mining company with operations near Cananea and Magdalena in the Northern Mexican state of Sonora. The Rand McNally map is overprinted in red to show the locations of Greene Consolidated Gold Company properties as well as major railroad lines across the country. A special inset titled "Topographical Map of the Eastern Portion of the State of Sonora Showing the Operating and Projected Railways with Relation to the Property of the Grene Consolidated Gold Co. and Other Important Mining Districts" provides a magnified view of the region where the company operated and also shows other significant commercial mining ventures in this part of Sonora as well as planned railroad construction in the area. The inscription states "This book is inscribed by the illustrator C.K. Berryman". 8vo. 20 by 16.5 cm. 74 1 pp. Cartoons are of the political luminaries of the day including many names still recognizable such as Elihu Root William Borah Taft TR Robert LaFolette Gifford Pinchot Henry Stimson Woodrow Wilson and on and on. Clever rhymes for the ABC and then clever variants of well-known nursery rhymes. The drawings capture the persons depicted with great fidelity yet impressive economy. Berryman began his career as an artist for the patent office before joining the staff of "The Washington Post" in 1891 as an understudy for its chief cartoonist then becoming its official cartoonist in 1896. In 1907 he left the Post for "The Washington Star" where he drew cartoons until his death. He is probably best known for inspiring the Teddy Bear. The Gridiron Club was founded in 1885 and remains one of the most prestigious press clubs in the nation. The Gridiron Dinner is an annual rite in Washington often attended by the sitting President. Very good. An attractive image showing a family of Greenlanders sledding and skiing down a hill likely produced by Lars Møller Greenland's premier printer or by Møller's youngest son Steffen. The illustration shows a family of seven Greenland natives sledding down a hill while two other youngsters ski alongside with one of the skiers in the process of falling. Other winter sports enthusiasts cavort in the distance and the stark Greenland landscape is ably depicted. Lars Møller an accomplished printer and illustrator was the dominant figure in Greenlandic printing in the last quarter of the 19th century producing much of the printed output in the country. His son Steffen succeeded his father and produced impressive works in his own right including a native language speller from which this illustration may be an example. Seven volumes are in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt text and decorations on the spine and with an illustrated paper label on the front boards. The eighth volume is a green cloth and green paper covered clam shell box which contains facsimiles of the maps from the expedition. The box is finished with details comparable to the other volumes. Each are small 4tos measuring 9" by 6". Volume I contains 374 pages of text; Volume II contains 386 pages; volume III contains 363 pages; volume IV contains 372 pages; volume V contains 395 pages; volume VI contains 280 pages; volume VII contains 534 pages and volume VIII contains the 16 page introduction to the atlas and index to the maps and all 71 individual maps labeled 1 through 54 all of which are in fine condition Dust jackets were not issued with this set. This set represents a facsimile reprint of the original 1905 edition of The American Philosophical Society which based its publication on the original documents in their library. November 19 through December 28 1931 and April 12 through May 24 1932. According to the entry for this book in: Big Little Book Club #GW2 707. this book only had one press run. The measurements vary slightly from that descibed in the BLBC reference their's being 3 3/8" by 4 3/8" x 1 1/2". This is an exceptionally fresh clean copy with just a little rubbing at the corners and a tiny crack at the top edge of the spine. unknown books

Landy." The recipient Glenn Goldman founded Book Soup in 1975 an independently owned bookstore on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood specializing in art music film photography design and fiction. American psychotherapist Dr. Eugene E. Landy was best known for his unconventional psychological treatments especially for his treatment of Wilson in the 1970s and 80s in which he essentially took control of his life monitoring him 24 hours a day with a team of assistants to keep him sober. The treatment was later deemed unethical by Californian courts and was later dramatized in the 2014 biographical film Love & Mercy in which Landy is portrayed by Paul Giamatti. This is the second of the three volumes of verse published by the Lebanese-born poet Rashid Ayyub 1872-1941 nicknamed the "complaining" or "dervish" poet. It's frontispiece is a characteristic image by Kahlil Gibran Jubran Kahlil Jibran. As a merchant he visited Paris and Manchester and later emigrated to New York where he joined the romantic movement of the Mahjar "exiled" poets founding with other writers al-R bi a al-Qalamiyya the first Arab-American literary society. An iconic poster protesting the arrest of the Chicago 8 on conspiracy charges relating to the protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The group originally as eight members consisted of Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin founders of the Youth International Party YIPPIES Tom Hayden a co-founder in Students for a Democratic Society Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale whose case would be declared a mistrial during the trial leading to his exclusion from the Chicago 7 David Dellinger and Rennie Davis members of the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam MOBE and John Froines and Lee Weiner. The address 28 E. Jackson was a building where Rennie Davis rented a space so it is possible that the MOBE printed this though we cannot confirm. unknown books

This large vintage photograph showing a horse-drawn parade float model of Shackleton's Nimrod with the ship's name and "Lieut Shackleton in Antarctic Regions" painted on the side. Manning the float are 6 young men and a small boy all in cold weather gear.<br/><br/>It's a wonderful demonstration of the interest in polar exploration during the Heroic Age. Many of the expeditions enjoyed send off and welcome parades and this is almost certainly a relic from one of these for the Nimrod expedition 1907-09. The largest of all parades for the Nimrod was actually held in Lyttleton New Zealand where as many as 50000 people turned out for the send off. Indeed the photographer here Preston was based in Penzance. The image was almost certainly taken by him or his son Richard. <br/><br/>The Nimrod Expedition 1907-9 was Shackleton's first Antarctic expedition as leader - he had previously sailed under Scott on the Discovery Expedition. Shackelton was attempting to be the first to reach the South Pole. Though he failed at this the expedition was notable for reaching the farthest South point just over 100 miles from the pole and for the ascent of Mount Erebus. Shackleton returned to England a hero and was subsequently knighted by Edward VII. unknown books
