El "Divino Capitán", probablemente extremeño, de Alcántara según Rodríguez Moñino, aunque napolitano según otros, citado, alabado y admirado por sus contemporáneos, es hoy un casi perfecto y exquisito olvidado. El no menos exquisito Cernuda vería en este olvido una prueba más del sino fatal que llevó a la pérdida de buena parte de la obra del poeta y a su muerte en temprana edad, tras pasar su primera juventud en Florencia dedicado al dulce juego del amor galante y de la creación literaria para acabar abrazando a los quince años la carrera militar y pasar a Flandes con los Tercios, donde escribiría las presentes Epístolas. El final no puede ser mas trágico: el destino le unió a la empresa africana del jóven Rey de Portugal Don Sebastián. Murió en plena Batalla de Alcazarquivir el 4 de Agosto de 1578, a los cuarenta y un años de su edad.
