First Edition. The pamphlet concerns the 1772 first partition of Poland judging the partition neither just nor useful. "… an unjust system by virtue of the violation of all the rights of Men; pernicious to Europe by an example that destroys the ties of society; dangerous to two Powers interested in the unmeasured and free elevation of the third of which both Powers have much to fear." Translated from the Polish The First Partition of Poland or the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth took place in 1772 as the first of 3 partitions that ended the existence of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by 1795. Frederick the Great engineered the partition to prevent Austria jealous of Russian successes against the Ottoman Empire from going to war. The weakened Commonwealth's land including what was already controlled by Russia was apportioned among its more powerful neighbors – Austria Russia and Prussia – so as to restore the regional balance of power in Central Europe. With Poland unable to effectively defend itself and with foreign troops already inside the country the Polish parliament ratified the partition in 1773 during the Partition Sejm convened by the three powers. 178621241London Chelsea: William Watts 1786. First Edition. Framed and matted. John Claude Nates or Nattes. The print visible is 16 by 21 cm. The pictorial part of the print: 12.5 by 18 cm. The frame: 35 by 40 cm. The frame is a somewhat elaborate production with an outer band of blond painted wood which rises to a narrower more tradition gilt molded piece. The matting is an off-white fabric with a narrow inner gilt piece. The print is browned and foxed with the picture itself consequently darkened a bit. The hand-coloring was done with considerable care but the color application was done with a light touch we are speaking of the amount of coloring not the palette used. The result is muted but pleasingly so and we do think the color teases out some detail and actually adds to the illusion of dimensionality. The matting has a light dampstain. The frame itself has some minor surface loss. We think the frame is worth preserving and as to the outer part of it having an issue albeit a minor one we would recommend just painting over this part and with gilt leaf it will look far better than this frame ever looked. Forbes 1742-1812 was the Pastor of the church in Raynham President pro-tem of Brown University and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He seems to have specialised in sermons on public occasions; in 1784 he preached at the execution for burglary of one John Dixon. This sermon reflects a key moment in the politics of the young Republic and the special political character of Massachusetts. George Washington who was in the middle of his final term as President was attempting to hold the balance between two political forces the Federalists who had created the Union and the Democratic- Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson who stressed states' rights and libertarian principles. Behind the disputes about domestic issues lay important philosophical disagreements. The Federalists were distinctly lukewarm about the French Revolution and the whole idea of democracy; their opponents accused them of being aristocratic and royalist in their aspirations. In foreign policy this led the Federalists to sympathise with England against France while the Democratic- Republicans held the reverse view. Washington while officially non-partisan was psychologically drawn to the Federalist position and went over openly to them after his Presidency ended. This led to bitter criticism of him by Jefferson and his party. Massachusetts was the strongest centre of Federalism indeed the Party survived there long after it had collapsed in the rest of the country. The Governor Samuel Adams a cousin of the 2nd President John Adams was a Federalist. His career illustrates that revolutionary fervour against English rule was not necessarily associated with social radicalism. He was one of the earliest separatists and drafted the Massachusetts constitution and the Bill of Rights. He was an organiser of the Boston Tea Party. Fobes' sermon takes as its text 2nd. Peter 11 10 & 12 'They despise government - are not afraid to speak evil of dignataries - and things they understand not'. He strongly criticises those who 'speak evil' of governors an obvious reference to the Democratic- Republicans and the idea that government can be carried on if not based on the Christian religion - a specific attack on French influences Deism and Tom Paine. However he qualifies this by referring to the light of liberty kindled in America now shining in France and by claiming that Republicanism is the form of government enjoined by the Bible. This is an interesting aspect of the Sermon. There are any number of sermons which proclaim that Monarchy is the Divinely instituted form of government but few which claim this for Republicanism. In France the Republican ideal was associated with the rejection of Christian doctrines and in Ireland the division within the camp of democracy was between those inspired by French ideas and the upholders of legislative independence under the English crown. In Ireland the American and French Revolutions had very different effects - the triumph of the Volunteers in 1782 and the defeat of the United Irishmen in 1798. This sermon with its innate conservatism helps to cast useful light on the ideological gulf which separated these revolutions which in historical writing have been closely associated. Terrence 190 B.C. - 159 B.C. was a North African slave of a Roman senator Terentius Lucanus. He was the author of 6 major palys. His style deviated from earlier dramatic form. He avoided monologues favoring dialogue that was more like ordinary conversation devoid of flamboyance. His prologues were essays in literary crticism and he was deeply concerned with unity in the plot sometimes incorporating passages from other plays. He moved drama in the direction of realism and was influential on the writings of Cicero Horace and the early Christian Church fathers. This edition of his plays was prepared for German students with extensive notes explaining the most difficult passages the Latin idiomatic expressions and Greek roots of som eof the words. 179900TP99France 1799. Small handwritten recipe for a glue to hold porcelain together. Blending lead oils paper and flour. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS 1792-1872. Born in 1792 Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world" he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100000 books and at least 60000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Visiting scholars driven to distraction would spend days hunting for an elusive text in the dusty heaps that filled every room. Because Sir Thomas has a morbid dread of fire most of his collection was housed in coffinlike boxes that could be carted away quickly. Visitors to Middle Hill were struck too by the presence of numerous logs a ploy he used to lure beetles away from his books. As Sir Thomas relentlessly pursued his passion the house itself began to crumble and its floors started to sag under the cast weight of hundreds of tons of paper. His neglect of Middle Hill was partly deliberate however. Sir Thomas's chief enemy in life James Halliwell had married his daughter against his wishes. It appears that Halliwell was in Sir Thomas' eyes the worst kind of criminal a book thief who had stolen valuable works from university libraries and even from his father-in-law. Having no sons Sir Thomas was unable to prevent Halliwell from inheriting his estate. To ensure that his detested heir would never receive anything of value Sir Thomas's solution was to allow Middle Hill to fall unto complete disrepair. He even went so far as to chop down and sell for lumber the centuries-old oak trees that lined the majestic mile-long drive to his home. In 1863 Sir Thomas decided to move - in order to accommodate his books. With the aid of 160 men 103 wagonloads of books and papers drawn by 230 horses the books were lumbered from Middle Hill top their new estate in nearby Cheltenham. It is said that for years afterwards the countryside was littered with the remains of carts that had collapsed under the sheer weight of the Phillipps collection. Sir Thomas continues to add to his library until his death in 1872. After Sir Thomas's death his immediate family had no room for his collection. So vast was the library that although individual items and large sections were sold privately or through numerous auction sales the Phillipps collection is still being sold more than a century after the death of its owner. In the course of its sales many treasures have come to light. As late as 1964 part of the long-lost and unique medieval manuscript of the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses appeared and was subsequently reunited with its other half at Magdalen College Oxford. Once destined for destruction as worthless wastepaper this and many other priceless works were saved by the single-minded obsession of the greatest bibliomaniac of all time. Autograph. Manuscript. These hollow book boxes were common before after the second war in the book stals on the banks of the Siene. They were made from broken sets which were common in that era and were considered a great keepsake in the growing tourist trade.
