Small nicks on the cloth at the spine ends small finger pressure mark on front gutter tiny ink spot on foredge and some scattered foxing but a nice and fresh near fine copy. An attempt by the important educator reformer and sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe to promote the cause of her pupil author Delia Bacon in the aftermath of a matrimonial breach of promise suit and her prosecution in the court of public opinion by the authorities at Yale whom Beecher felt had thwarted her case. Bacon would seek solace in her research popularizing the notion that Shakespeare's works were actually written by a group of writers including Francis Bacon and Walter Scott. 1855007164Sacramento California 1855. Manuscript. Very Good. No Binding. HOLOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. Two manuscript letters in ink both on ruled paper with folding creases the 1855 letter 8" x 12 1/2" with single spaced writing both sides approx. 500 words. The 1856 letter 15" x 10" folded in half to make 4 pp. approx. 300 words with small blindstamp top left corner depicting an eagle. The earlier letter is headed "September 18th 1855 Naperville Dupage County Illinois" and ends "Michael direct your letters Nevada County Nevada post office California". George writes to his brother Michael in Naperville that he has "seen a good dele sins i rote you they last letter" including a hundred "inshins" and some "Buffellow". He adds that "we had good luck all they way of may we left Council Bluff" and that he is not home sick yet. He then talks of the gold mines river mining what they are paying and the cost of things such as board "from five to ten dollars a week" "Beaf" "wors 15 to 20 cents" and "potato" "4 cent per pound". He adds that he intends to have some gold before he comes home and that "girls are not so plenty here as they are in state". He closes by asking his brother to write him and to remain at home in Illinois to care for their parents. The 1856 letter headed Sacramento august 3th 1856 informs his brother that he is well and "down to Sacramento now" working on a farm feeding a "schrasing" thrashing machine and that "they times is verry hard in California now". He adds that he had some money "stole" while he was in the mountains but since coming down into the valley he was making money and will send some home soon. The letter ends with George wishing to see them all soon and that he is not home sick. The third page of the letter bears a drawing of a wing or leaf eleven smaller versions of the same image interspersed on page 2. A fascinating testimonial on California during the gold rush written in a strong hand and in a wonderful vernacular style by a good observer. unknown

Férdinand Langlé littérateur dramatist and occasional necromancer focused his literary interests on the nostalgic and the romantic. In 1828 he edited Les Contes du Gay-Sçavoir a witty collection of medieval ballads and fables. The text is printed in Gothic characters and illustrated to imitate the style of medieval manuscript illumination; it is followed by endnotes and a glossary printed in Roman type. The major illustrator of the work Richard Parkes Bonington was an English Romantic landscape painter who also worked in lithography. He was a close and admired friend of painters Eugene Delacroix and Antoine-Jean Gros. Gordon Ray speaking of Bonington says his importance in the development of lithography can hardly be overstated.His designs for Vues pittoresques de lEcosse and Contes des Gay-Sçavoir are by no means negligible. 1860217199Japan. Circa1860. Black and white woodblock kawaraban two sheets illustrations each measuring 23 x 31.5cm a little occasional browning margins otherwise very good. These two kawaraban sheets feature large portraits of the "King of France" and a European woman. The king’s name is transcribed in hiragana as "Furomusuanakaruma" an interesting phonetic rendering. This sheet also includes illustrations of coins from various European countries such as Holland and France as well as China with brief explanations of each. <br> <br>The second sheet presents a Western woman most likely Dutch named "Ta Maria Soitesu." She is depicted with her dog on the right and detailed descriptions of her appearance—fair skin a small mouth hairstyle and dress—are provided. The sheet also notes that Jobutsu Temple in Kanagawa was used by the Dutch as their first consulate around 1860. This sheet features coins from Britain and Russia with one coin displaying the head of Queen Victoria. . unknown

Four albumen cabinet photographs sized 3.9 x 4.9 in. mounted on thick studio board stock sized 4.25 x 5.25 in. w/ all four containing manuscript annotations in ink on versos minor dustsoiling edgewear minor over-exposure to a couple images still a nice grouping with consistent contrast and definition. These scarce original albumen photos show the canyon water fall power and miners along the Hoodoo Quartz Claim Mineral Survey No. 403A and B which was filed originally in 1892 and are neatly numbered 3 6 15 & 11. The first image shows a heavily forested canyon with creek running through and annotations on verso detailing that the “Anaconda and Roman Senator lodes at the head of gulch.†The second photo shows fast running water fall and creek -- “water power that will be utilized in the development of the Stilliguamish sic and Sultan Mining Co’s property. Copper Lake Canyon.†Third photo depicts gold miners carrying and working with pick axes in “Hoodoo Canyon 500 feet higher up. . . the vein is found in the bed of the gulch at this point.†The series of mines developed by the Stillaguamish & Sultan Mining Co. had a well-defined fissure vein carrying iron and copper pyrites and pyrrhotite with bell metal all contained in a lime quartz gangue. The main tunnel was driven 420 feet on the Hoodoo ledge with about another 200 feet of tunneling ore concentrate worth about $83 a ton including gold silver and copper ores. The description on back of four describes “passageway where work was shot away for approach to Hoodoo tunnel. The snow banks in the distance and at the right are at the foot of Big Four Mountain. . . seen plainly from Monte Cristo 8 miles East.†By 1905 the company was largely dormant and later the mines would be owned by the Sykes Estate of which the Continental Illinois National Bank & Trust Co. of Chicago was the trustee. With original mailing envelope. This two-page printed circular dated May 19th 1855 from the Anglo-California Gold Mining Company in London offers to convert "unissued shares" of company stock into "preference shares." The first page of the circular reads in part:<br /> <br /> "You will observe from the enclosed report not present of the adjourned General Meeting that circumstances have arisen in California rendering it imperative that the Director should immediately have at his command a further sum of £6600. You will also observe that the Board have power to convert the unissued shares into preference shares at par to be offered in the first instance to the present holders of shares. The advantage offered to persons taking those Shares is that they are guaranteed a dividend of 25 per cent per annum before any dividend is paid on the other Shares."<br /> <br /> The second leaf of the bifolium prints a blank form for recipients to purchase said preferred shares. During the first years of the California gold rush approximately 120 companies formed in Great Britain to offer mining shares in the booming goldfields to the public. Many saw these companies as an opportunity to invest in the boom without facing the expense or the danger of traveling to California. Most however ended in failure and investors collectively lost almost £2 million at the time.<br /> <br /> The Anglo-California Gold Mining Company formed by Luke Williams in March 1849 was one of the first and largest of these British ventures and it sold thousands of ten shilling shares to the public. Williams sent a former Royal Navy Captain Henry Vere Huntley to the Calaveras River in early 1850 to start the operation. When he failed Williams arranged a deal with Fremont's Quartz Rock Mariposa Gold Company to crush and refine their ore and the ore of smaller ventures. To that end the company sent two steam-powered crushing mills to California and when those proved useless to the task the company failed. May 19 unknown
18563459n.p.: n.p. 1856. Hardcover. Fair. This quarto-sized scrapbook in green cloth over boards was manufactured c. 1850 by Eayrs & Fairbanks No. 133 Washington St. Boston. It is about half full of contemporary news clippings affixed with paste. The scrapbooker did not comment on them with the exception of one instruction to "See the loose piece."The first 40 pages are from 1856-1857. The majority of articles deal with slavery especially political events in the Kansas Territory "Bleeding Kansas" the Dred Scott Case and President James Buchanan. The first clipping is from Feb. 9 1856 and details a pro-slavery meeting in Missouri addressed by David Atchison. The last clipping in this section is from April 24 1857 and reports on Stanton's speech at Lawrence Kansas.After a break of three blank pages the scrapbook resumes with news of Reconstruction from June 30 1868. There are 6 more pages of eclectica: political news clippings interspersed with a poem by Whittier and advice on How to Keep the Feet Dry.While the scrapbook is unsigned it can be tentatively identified with the Orton family since the last page contains an 1868 20th reunion announcement from the Hamilton College class of 1848 along with 1868 clippings from southwestern Ohio newspapers including the Springfield Ohio Republic. The only surviving member of that class residing near the Dayton-Springfield area is Prof. Edward Orton Sr. Yellow Springs OH where he was president of Antioch College. The 1850s clippings come mostly from New York newspapers particularly the Tribune and the Orton family was living in Chester Orange County NY at that time.Orton went on to become the first President of the Ohio State University from 1873 to 1881.The scrapbook is in fair condition; the pages and paper have held up remarkably well. Full leather binding with gilt lettering & decoration to spine gilt ruled borders on both boards all edges gilt marbled endpapers engraved frontispiece and title page 6-1/4" x 4†434 pp. Aucher’s name appears in three different versions on the first leaf: Armenian transliterated Armenian and Latin dated 1847. George Gordon Lord Byron traveled to the Island of St. Lazar where Father Pascal Aucher 1774-1854 taught him Armenian. Together they published Grammar of the English and Armenian Languages in 1819 and contributed to Aucher’s 1821 English Armenian Dictionary. Byron was devoted to the Armenian language writing: “I learned the language of the Armenians in order to understand how and what language the Gods spoke for the Armenian language is the language of the Gods and Armenia is the homeland of the Gods and the Gods come from the Ararat valley.â€A translation of twenty-four prayers one for each hour of the day of St. Nerses the Graceful translated into twenty-four languages. This is the culmination of an effort that first had 6 10 14 and then 16 translations. This effort was likely from many of the Mekhitarist monks at San Lazzaro degli Armeni. The monastery was founded in 1715 by twelve monks; when Byron visited there were 70; today there are 12 monks and five novices. Despite the small population St. Lazzaro has been a major center of Armenian studies for centuries and still maintains the third-largest library of Armenian materials in the world. This polyglot prayer book is notable not just for its place in Armenian history and the spread of Orthodoxy but it is also a typographic success in acquiring the various fonts.</p> In Insula S.
