Binding: Skillfully rebacked half calf preserving contemporary blue speckled - marbled boards. Spine raised with six 6 bands; compartments elegantly gilt ornamented at borders corners and centres and gilt lettered title on two. Notes: Work I: Raphael 1483-1520 painted the ceilings walls and columns of the Vatican Logge over the two-year period before he would pass away. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. These particular images are renowned for their clarity and accessibility. Much of the subject matter on the columns is traced to Roman iconography. Such items as coins vases sarcophagi and various other items are done with stunning clarity and accuracy. Carlo Lasinio 1759 – 1838 was an Italian engraver who worked chiefly in Florence. Lasinio started as a painter at the Accademia di Belle Arti Venice. He quickly placed more emphasis on printmaking especially after moving to Florence in 1778. He established his reputation with two large series of etchings in 1787 and 1789. Lasinio also taught engraving at the Accademia in Florence becoming a Professor in 1800. <br><br>Work II: A collection of plates from this work with no title page. The Raphael fresco decorations in the Vatican's three-storied balconies known as the 'Logge' quickly became famous and various suites of plates were issued from the 17th century onward. However this set was the first to attempt to show all the decoration of the pilasters and pillars. A set of the present engravings stimulated Catherine the Great to have a replica of the Logge built at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.<br><br> Size: Folio 621x478mm. With two engraved plates by Augustus Hoppin and with chapter headpieces and engraved initials Small 8vo in the publisher's original textured green cloth the upper cover framed in blind and lettered "A Christmas Story" in gilt with stylized decorative lettering the design repeated on the rear cover but in blind the spine blind lettered within a gilt decorative emblem yellow endpapers. 104 pp. A rare survival in original cloth and in unusually well preserved condition the text clean and with minimal mellowing the green cloth bright and unfaded the hinges firm and intact a little wear or rubbing to the corners and edges. AN IMPORTANT WORK ABOUT FORMER SLAVES CELEBRATING THEIR FIRST CHRISTMAS AFTER EMANCIPATION the story reflects Northern sentiments and pro-emancipation ideals and recounts the first Christmas in the North celebrated by fugitive slaves and those liberated by the Emancipation Proclamation.<br> This scarce first edition is an important fugitive slave novel. The first edition was published toward the end of the Civil War then re-issued in 1865 at the war's conclusion. It is perhaps the first novel to discuss openly the "N" word and its possible derivation from the word "niger" and how the word was used to denigrate the individual and persist in pre-emancipation prejudice.<br> CONTRABAND CHRISTMAS tells the story of formerly enslaved people “contrabands†who have taken refuge with Union forces. As Christmas approaches they will be experiencing the holiday as free individuals for the first time. The story culminates in a Christmas gathering filled with hymns prayer and reflection. Themes include freedom slavery faith human dignity and the transformative impact of the Civil War. One point of note CONTRABAND CHRISTMAS contains one of the earliest explanations of the entirely derogatory character of the "N" word.<br> Worldcat credits the author as being Taylor Root but it is sometimes attributed to William Henry Hurlbert. Sometimes attributed to Theophilus Presbyter sometimes to Roger of Helmarshausen. The book allows detailed insights into the techniques used in the applied arts in the high Middle Ages. The work is divided into three books. The first covers the production and use of painting and drawing materials painting techniques paints and ink especially for illumination of texts and painting of walls. The second deals with the production of stained glass and techniques of glass painting while the last deals with various techniques of goldsmithing and other metalwork. It also includes an introduction into the building of organs. Translation and notes by Robert Hendrie. An ex-library copy in publisher's blind-stamped green cloth gilt lettered. Text block is clean and sound although quite shaken. Binding is frayed along part of the rear joint but board remains firmly attached. Aurelius Fulvius Antonius Pius Aurelius Antoni Satyr Apollo Demeter Ceres and Sepulchral Rites at the Tomb of a Hero. </p><br /><p>The Elgin Marbles are a collection of statues and architectural decoration acquired by the Earl of Elgin during his time as Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. He successfully petitioned the authorities to be able to measure draw and remove figures in various ruins. The most extensive work was on the Parthenon or Temple of Athena but he also received permission to remove sculptural and architectural elements from a number of other ruins including the Acropolis and the Temple of Nike Athena. </p><br /><p>The most famous of the Elgin Marbles are the Parthenon Sculptures a collection of different types of marble architectural decoration on the Parthenon. The Parthenon Frieze 75 metres in length depicts various scenes including the battle between the Lapitas and the Centaurs at the marriage feast of Peirithoos. Elgin originally intended on using the Frieze as decoration in his private home but due to the collapse of his marriage he sold them to the British Museum. There have been debates over the legitimacy of Elgin's excavation. After an investigation from a Parliamentary Select Committee in 1816 Elgin's actions were found to be entirely legal. Since 1983 Greece has formally requested the British Museum to return all the Parthenon Sculptures in the Museum's collection the British Museum states there are no current discussions with the Greek Government on this issue. </p><br /><p>Roger Fenton is one of the most celebrated figures in the history of photography. He was a creative and highly influential photographer in the mediums "golden age" of the 1850s. In his role as the British Museum's first official photographer Fenton demonstrated his sure sense as a 'photo artist'. He was initially engaged to photograph cuneiform tablets but that soon developed into taking pictures of other antiquities. As early as 1852 Fenton received permission from the Trustees to photograph antiquities within the museum establishing a small studio inside the museum the following year. He left in 1854 to serve as a photographer in the Crimean War for which he is most widely known but he was re-appointed on his return in 1856 until the termination of his contract in July 1859. The Trustees decided that photography was not cost effective and after they failed to negotiate the South Kensington Museum now the V&A as an alternative Fenton terminated his association with the British Museum. </p><br />References: The British Museum The Metropolitan Museum of Art Luminous-Lint. The title-page notes that it is translated from the German translation 1816 and the preface notes that the first edition in Russian appeared in 1815. A second Russian edition appeared at St. Petersburg in 1818 and has sometimes been described as the first.The great Russian author Pavel Petrovic Svinyin or Svin'in here westernized to "Paul Swinin" is best known for his Sketches of Russia published in the West under the name "Suinine". The identity of the Dutch translator of the present work is unknown. It gives an interesting "picturesque" travel account of the United States spanning the year 1813 and provides five main accounts covering different subjects: a statistical survey; a religious overview with descriptions of the several Christian communities naming Methodists Quakers Shakers Baptists and more; a description of the different types of steamboats used in North America; a biography of the French general Jean Victor Moreau who lived in exile in the United States from 1805 to 1812; and a description of the dancing rituals of indigenous American "Indians" naming the Osage Arkansas Sioux and Saki tribes which the Russian author interestingly compares with tribes in the Caucasus.With the bookplate of the society Doctrina & Amicitia on the front paste-down. The author 1802-1885 was a Methodist and ardent abolitionist and anti-slavery polemicist who also dabbled in mesmerism phrenology and spiritualism some of that is the subject of this book and occult phenomena but was critical of mesmerism and its claims as well as phrenology etc. earning the wrath of many of the pseudo-scientists of his time. He was however interested in the place of trances and hypnotism in American revivalist theology and coined a term "pathetism" to describe the possible beneficial effects of the trance state in revival meetings and prayer groups.
