183357649V.p. 1833. A dozen or so items over half of which seem inconsequental. Ezbon or Esbon Sanford 1765-1846 was born in Newport worked in Washington County. He was a storekeeper innkeeper and cabinetmaker and is cited in various articles about Rhode Island furniture making. One receipt is from the "estate of Abigail Congdon" his mother-in-law which details payment for molasses and gin as well as a coffin for herself at $6.00. A detailed inventory May 15 1833 is included of the estate of Anna Buckingham of North Kingstown Washington County. All her belongings are listed including furniture: "eleven old fiddleback maple chairs" at $5. This type of chair is described in an article by Kathleen E. Johnson in Art & Antiques Magazine Sept/Oct 1981 as "an intentional translation of the elements of the carved mahoghany or walnut cabriole legged Queen Anne- style chair into the vocabulary of the turned chair tradition." A large floor plan for a house with its footprint neatly laid out is one of the more interesting documents with a detailed list of supplies joists ranging timber furing laths doors & frames roof boards shingles and nails each with prices. Ezbon Sanford held a local court office as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas and nother interesting document is dated 1830 from the state to the sheriff concerning the warrant for the arrest of George Young charging him as the father of Margaret Mitchel's "bastard child." The paper was signed by John H. Green Deputy Sheriff. Other names mentioned in his storekeeper receipts are Robert Hosford Robert Northrup Charles Douglas Weighty Underwood and Paul Austin. unknown

Binding: Skillfully rebacked half calf preserving contemporary blue speckled - marbled boards. Spine raised with six 6 bands; compartments elegantly gilt ornamented at borders corners and centres and gilt lettered title on two. Notes: Work I: Raphael 1483-1520 painted the ceilings walls and columns of the Vatican Logge over the two-year period before he would pass away. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. These particular images are renowned for their clarity and accessibility. Much of the subject matter on the columns is traced to Roman iconography. Such items as coins vases sarcophagi and various other items are done with stunning clarity and accuracy. Carlo Lasinio 1759 – 1838 was an Italian engraver who worked chiefly in Florence. Lasinio started as a painter at the Accademia di Belle Arti Venice. He quickly placed more emphasis on printmaking especially after moving to Florence in 1778. He established his reputation with two large series of etchings in 1787 and 1789. Lasinio also taught engraving at the Accademia in Florence becoming a Professor in 1800. <br><br>Work II: A collection of plates from this work with no title page. The Raphael fresco decorations in the Vatican's three-storied balconies known as the 'Logge' quickly became famous and various suites of plates were issued from the 17th century onward. However this set was the first to attempt to show all the decoration of the pilasters and pillars. A set of the present engravings stimulated Catherine the Great to have a replica of the Logge built at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.<br><br> Size: Folio 621x478mm. 18553206Coyoteville: September 12 1855. Very good. 2pp. plus integral blank. Original mailing folds moderate toning staining and ink spotting but still easily readable. Bottom fourth of integral blank excised. An informative Gold Rush letter about mining in the long-vanished ghost town of Coyoteville which was an extraordinarily rich gold area for a couple of years in the early 1850s. A noted tunneling method nicknamed "coyoteing" was developed in the town and subsequently inspired the name of the town. In the present letter Moses Pine writes to "Catherine" in Branch County Michigan and signs his name simply as "Mose Esq" at the conclusion. The author informs Catherine presumably his wife or sister of his activities some of the economic realities and some of the practical details of prospecting for gold in California. Presuming that "it would be impossible for the whole of Branch County to raise $10 unless they sell a horse" Pine comments that he had ginger bread on the Fourth of July after working all day and yielding a "half Ounce Gold Dust." He then provides a detailed description of his mining: "I am now tunneling in a hill. We are 150 feet under the ground. Day before yesterday we got small respect 25 cents to the pan for the first and the bed rock pitching. I think we will find good pay in the going 100 feet further the expense is heavy as we have to blast and timber the tunnel." Pine also talks of his health and that "I work hard every day do my cooking and baking." He then expresses his hope to get back to Michigan to "rest a few months" but knows nothing of other Michigan folks in California: "Have not seen nor heard anything of them in a year. I guess they have all gone home with a fortune in a horn. Well good luck to the lucky. Old Mose will come home after a while with a pretty hat on." A nicely-detailed letter from an unusual and obscure Gold Rush location. September 12 unknown

Férdinand Langlé littérateur dramatist and occasional necromancer focused his literary interests on the nostalgic and the romantic. In 1828 he edited Les Contes du Gay-Sçavoir a witty collection of medieval ballads and fables. The text is printed in Gothic characters and illustrated to imitate the style of medieval manuscript illumination; it is followed by endnotes and a glossary printed in Roman type. The major illustrator of the work Richard Parkes Bonington was an English Romantic landscape painter who also worked in lithography. He was a close and admired friend of painters Eugene Delacroix and Antoine-Jean Gros. Gordon Ray speaking of Bonington says his importance in the development of lithography can hardly be overstated.His designs for Vues pittoresques de lEcosse and Contes des Gay-Sçavoir are by no means negligible. 1806145411Paris: Barba 1806. A beautiful copy Scarce first edition of this essential culinary encyclopaedia the most popular work published by a professional cook in the 19th century. Viard a worthy competitor to Carême in terms of celebrity dedicated his book to the famed gourmand and restaurant reviewer Grimod de La Reynière praising Grimod and his fellow food enthusiasts for having elevated culinary discourse. "To judge from his practical knowledge Viard must have been a professional cook at one time thought to have been chef de cuisine to Louis Philippe comte de Ségur and Francis Egerton 8th Earl of Bridgewater but he described himself simply as an homme de bouche food expert probably someone in charge of catering for a large household. Despite his book's impressive title Viard declared he was writing for 'all levels of fortune' in this egalitarian society of citoyens and indeed the polished text includes such basics as pea soup quick-cooked rabbit and salt cod provençale. At a higher level he was the first cook to describe the classic puffy soufflé flavoured with chestnuts frangipane white coffee vanilla or potato still a novelty that became such a symbol of France. The book did well even when the restoration of the French monarchy required a hasty title change to Le cuisinier royale and the 'year of revolutions' in 1848 precipitated another change this time to Le cuisinier national. only to revert to impérial once more under Emperor Napoleon III. The text too underwent hundreds of additions first by Viard and later by colleagues allowing it to remain in print until 1875" Willan running to at least thirty-two editions. Food scholar Darra Goldstein notes that Le cuisinier impérial also contains the first published recipe for apple charlotte. Hector Dubois d'Enghien was a trade bookbinder son of the prominent Brussels binder Joseph-François Dubois d'Enghien 1841-1923. He took over his father's workshop c.1918 and partnered with Edmond Dooms a gilder from De Samblanx in 1923. An accomplished scholar Hector Dubois d'Enghien wrote a history of bookbinding in Belgium published in 1954. The first edition of Le cuisinier impérial is rare both institutionally and commercially. WorldCat Library Hub and KVK locate just six copies institutionally: three copies in Germany Badische LB LB Rheinland-Pfalz Sächsische LB two in the US Harvard Schlesinger Indiana and one in France BnF. We can trace four copies at auction since the 1920s only one of which is dated from within the last 45 years. Octavo 192 x 122 mm. Beautifully bound by Dubois d'Enghien-Dooms in early 20th-century dark green straight-grain half morocco smooth spine lettered in gilt separated into compartments with gilt scrollwork rolls and double fillets floral motifs to first third fourth and fifth compartments marbled boards edges sprinkled blue. Bound like Cagle without the first leaf half-title verso a publisher's advertisement. A handsome Kelliegram binding by Kelly & Sons of London in full deep tobacco surely! brown crushed morocco with vignette on the front board depicting a hand gingerly taking snuff from a snuff box. The spine title is in typical art nouveau type and the image of a tall walking stick or cane appears down the middle of the spine. All edges gilt silk endpapers modest gilt dentelles and the original wraps bound-in at rear. Mild dust-soiling to wraps and contents and a very slight bend to the bottom of the rear board see image but still a near fine very sound and handsome example. The book is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of smokeless tobacco one of the great addictive pastimes of the 19th century though it is still a major industry. A lovely example in a charming binding which in Kelliegram style boldly announces the book's subject on the front board. An auction record from decades ago described a similar example as a "nicotian Kelliegram" one of a presumably small but recognizable group of tobacco-themed Kelliegram bindings. Delightful. Fascinating work being Alharizi's "Tahkemoni" composed between 1218 and 1220 in the Arabic form known as maqama Macamae. This is written in Hebrew in unmetrical rhymes in what is commonly termed rhymed prose. It is a series of humorous episodes witty verses and quaint applications of Scriptural texts. The episodes are bound together by the presence of the hero and of the narrator who is also the author. Some age-wear on binding with corners bumped not affecting pages and head and tail of spine partly chipped. Sticker with Hebrew lettering at head of spine. Pages slightly age-toned throughout. Two 8 X 8 CM photographs affixed to 8.75 X 17.5 CM yellowish studio card with rounded corners. The sides of the front and the back of the card contain the photographers information. Slight wear to edges and a little soiling to card. Nice image with clear detailing part of the image is a little out of focus. Slight fading and only a little soiling. The side edges of the card curl upwards slightly. Pencil notation of title on rear on which some words are illegible as shown in title very good From the series 'Views of British Columbia and Vancouver Island for sale'. Richard and Hannah Maynard moved from Cornwall England to Canada in 1852. Richard had been an apprentice boot maker in England and upon arrival in Bowmanville he again set up a shop to do his trade. In 1858-59 and 1862 Richard left his family to prospect gold. During this time Hannah began studying photography. In 1862 the family moved to Victoria. After the move Richard went up the Stikine Rover placer mining while Hannah and the family remained in Victoria. It is believed that it is during this time that Hannah first opened 'Mrs. R. Maynard's Photographic Gallery'. Richard returned in 1863 to find her successfully entrenched in the business. Hannah taught Richard the photography skills she had learned. As it was somewhat usual for a woman to be a professional photographer during that time there is often confusion as to who actually took some of the photographs his name often being attributed to her work and vice versa. Richard pursued his photographic interest in the wilderness as well as opening a new boot shop in Victoria it was common at the time to be a professional photographer on the side of running another business. Hannah's main interest laid in the studio and the experimental possibilities of the camera. As Richard limited his photographs to the outdoors it is easy to tell the studio portraits are Hannah's. Richard took every opportunity to work outdoors; however sometimes Hannah went on his trips with him and also took photographs. Because of this overlap between the couples photographic subject matter in relation to landscapes it is difficult to ascertain who is responsible for the creation of many of these images. 1880 R. Some chipping and wear to edge ink number written in corner two small section of loss due to improper mounting very good overall. Coat of arms of the United Kingdom above printed text. Very Good. A scarce broadside relating to British postal rates across the Panama Route through the Chagres River which supplied mail to California and Oregon beginning in 1848 before eventually being replaced by the Overland route in 1860. The service was characterized by long delay times as steamships on either side of the isthmus were often not coordinated causing major delays in the delivery. Several different steamship companies operated privately some carrying express mail. The letters were transported by canoe or pack animal across the isthmus. Postmaster General Cave Johnson began establishing post offices in California in 1848. Johnson also oversaw the transition to the prepaid delivery system.
