"His natural history journals which included weather prognostics were published by his son in 1827 as 'The Pocket Encyclopædia of Natural Phenomena'." --Oxford DNB. His son Thomas Ignatius Maria Forster 1789-1860 wrote on various scientific and philosophical topics. He was a proponent of phrenology a term he is credited with inventing. The first America's Cup: a rare hand coloured lithographed view of the winning yacht which gave its name to the cup.<br/> <br/> In 1851 the Royal Yacht Squadron proposed a race around the Isle of Wight. A group of New York Yacht Club members led by Commodore John Cox Stevens built a yacht designed to compete in such races. Designed by Steers and Co. and captained by Richard Brown the yacht America would win the race by eighteen minutes giving its name to one of the oldest and best-known trophies of the sport: the America's Cup. This lithograph and lithographer are not recorded by Harry T. Also features a decorated title page a wood engraving printed in dark green with titling in red. The text pages are adorned with floral vine borders all wood engravings. In the publisher's white silk binding with overall tan olive light blue blue gray brown red and crimson-printed "Dutch" vignettes and a pair of buff paper onlays with red and black-printed titling. Period ink gift inscription to the prefatory blank leaf. Some very mild toning to paper onlays; else a remarkably fresh example housed in the publisher's two-piece box which is covered with textured paper with greengray red and gold-printed berry branch pattern on the upper half. Suite of nine hand-colored aquatint plates depicting the louche hedonistic and self-destructive life of a young aristocrat. Bound by Riviere & Son in full red morocco with ruled border raised bands other gilt decoration including turn-ins marbled endpapers. N.d. circa 1820s. 4to. 31 by 25 cm. No title page -- this was issued as a suite of plates not in a book form. A blank sheet in front two in back and tissue guards between plates. Each plate is depicting a scene and basically a step in the descent to self-destruction by the young buck aristocrat. Scenes are The Inheritance The First Party The Night House in other words the bordello The Betting Booth at the racetrack The Gambling House The Usurer The Mess Room clearly the dining room of an elite military unit The Duel and finally The Sick Room. We would note that the Usurer has the casual anti-Semitic trope so prevalent throughout history of the hook-nosed lender. The artwork has a pleasant slightly naive quality with the loosest of adherence to perspective. The settings are generally quite resplendent capturing Regency England grandeur perfectly. Scarce. Yale has several copies. Only two other complete sets held by institutions according to OCLC First Search one at Harvard and one somewhat later and published by Tegg at the Art Institute in Chicago. The Henderson version clearly the first was issued without color we would add. The Harvard Hollis catalogue gives no indication whether the copy at Houghton has hand-coloring -- something that Hollis generally will denote if it does. No copies found in commerce on date of this description was prepared. Light wear to binding. Light soiling in the margins of the plates. Pictorial elements consistently bright and attractive. McLeod 1774-1833 was a minister of the Reformed Presbyterian Church was born in the Island of Mull June 12 1774. His father and grandfather were ministers of the Church of Scotland. In 1792 he came to America and entered Union College where he graduated in 1798. In 1799 he was licensed by the Reformed Presbytery at Coldenham and in 1801 was installed pastor of the First Reformed Presbyterian Church. His first publication was Negro Slavery Unjustifiable N. Y. 1802. He published several books. He was the chief organizer of the American Colonization Society in 1816 and wrote its constitution. During his pastoral career he received various calls to other churches to colleges and to editorships; but he declined them all and remained in his charge until his death. Sheet music issued at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush capitalizing directly on the surge of public interest following the discoveries in the Yukon in 1896–1897. The lithographed title page signed in style by Robert Teller shows a dramatic scene of prospectors working a gold deposit in the mountains with two miners in the foreground bent over a pile of freshly uncovered gold tools in hand. Theodore August Metz was a German-born musician trained on violin in Hanover who emigrated to the United States and worked various trades before establishing himself as a bandleader and composer in Chicago’s late 19th-century popular music scene. He achieved national prominence with “There’ll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight†1896–97 a widely performed marching tune that became especially popular during the Spanish-American War and in minstrel and touring band repertories. <br /> <br /> OCLC 726910235 locating a single copy at the Levy Collection.
