The author was a newspaperman and the editor of the Salt L ake City Tribune. His style is a curious blend of the journalistic with the romantic. The scenes move easily between the Comstock Lode, England, and the mines of South Africa. The Comstock Lode was the group of celebrated silver and gold mines near Virginia City, Nevada. Between 1859-1870 it yielded well over 300 million tons of valuable ore. The profits made from the Lode accounted for much of the economic growth of the West in the late 19th century.
