James of the Skidoo Miners Union in California has been declared unfair and fined $25 for not paying dues and "for knocking organized labor." Ed Langdon of the Rossland Miners Union in British Columbia is on the other hand listed as having placed himself back in good standing. Also present is a form not filled out by which a union member could file a complaint to have someone declared unfair. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Rear board carries label stating "The Owner of this Card is entitled to admisssion to the Trades Hall Club at all Times and on payment of 6d. may have a Membership Card issued to him." Includes for example the following: Bye Laws of the Transvaal Miners' Association / Branch Lodge Rules / Executive Committee and Contributions details etc. Membership due stamps for 1912 present. The names of the senior officials trustees and exective member are listed on the back pastedown. Front pastedown carries details of the owner of this card. Member's Name listed as E. Morgan. From the papers of Arthur George Liddon Rogers 1864-1944 son of the editor of the economist Thorold Rogers and written while Rogers was Secretary of the Liberal Publication Department a sort of public relations department a position to which he was appointed in November 1891. 2pp 12mo. On bifolium. Signed 'Thos Burt'. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Begins 'Dear Mr Rogers / I see there were two divisions on the weighing clauses of the mines Act of 1887. The first on an amendment moved by Mr Fenwick to deprive the Home Secretary of the power to exempt any mine from the weighing clauses. The second moved by Mr Donald Proudford to make it imperative that the weight should be by imperial ton. The representatives of the miners in the House supported both and Mr. Herman Hodge voted against both.' He gives a reference to the 'Division List' and ends by stating that his name need not be mentioned 'in connection with this'. 2 June 1892. On House of Commons letterhead. unknown

With regard to an LPD publication he regrets that he ‘cannot do the leaflet’. Not only does he have ‘more work on hand than I can get through my having a member of the Royal Commission inquiring into the subject hampers me’. He does not think he could ‘with propriety write publicly on the subject at a time when I am engaged with others in preparing the Report’. TWO 2 February 1893: 4pp 12mo. A ‘rush of correspondence’ has left him without a ‘spare minute’. He is enclosing a letter from one of his constituents ‘in the hope that you may be able to forward him some leaflets bearing upon the points he mentions’. Burt’s own paper ‘on the Mines Reg Act that I wrote for you might be useful and I have no doubt you have something on Free Education and the other questions referred to’. He asks if there is ‘a cheap edition of Mr John Nohle’s book’. He ends with reference to the return of a book and the settling of an account. THREE 11 February 1893. 2pp 12mo. In thanking him for his ‘kind letter & for yr prompt attention to my request’ he is returning a cheque. FOUR 11 October 1893. 4pp 12mo. In a secretarial hand with Burt’s autograph signature. He is ‘away from the Board of Trade until Parliament re-assembles’ and is consequently ‘not in a position myself to verify all the facts contained in the enclosed pamphlet’. He believes ‘the facts given are strictly accurate except under the heading Seaman’s Wages’. As ‘chairman of the departmental Comttee that enquired into the subject’ he makes suggestions towards the way ‘the beginning of that paragraph should I think be somewhat modified’. He knows ‘that steps are now being taken to extend the system to foreign posts. If the leaflet is not issued before I return to the B of T I will make further enquiry should you so desire with a view to ensure absolute correctness.’ 2 June 1892; and 2 and 11 February, and 11 October, 1893. Moyle others; an open letter to Senator Borah by Tom Corra Organizer for the W.F.M regarding tariffs and employment; opinions on the Socialist Party trade unions 'News from Washington D.C.'; more; mining union news as in "Stay away from Tonopah Nevada" due to high unemployment and dismal future prospects for workers; also with a couple of pro-union anti-capitalist poetry pieces; a couple of memorials for passed union brothers; with a directory of local unions and offices of the Federation listed by state giving useful information with number name location meeting night president & secretary number of members address; with also the state and district listings and the womens' auxiliaries; with a few advertisements for union made materials and products and a warning "Don't be a Scab" in the mining camps of So. Dakota where the Homestake Mining Company required prospective employees to sign a non-union affiliation pledge - this paper has a facsimile printed of the pledge card on the 3rd page in; small old original subscription label on front cover of the American Association for Labor Legislation New York; large format 15 ½" x 11" size; printed on thin slightly glossy-stock paper original illustrated cover; some edgewear and chipping to paper old fold line at middle cover with a bit of loss along that line which splits the pages almost to the end of the issue no loss of text; overall in good condition and a fragile survival from this period of great unrest in the mining regions of the American West. . This book tells the story of the heroic struggle by the people of Easington District with tragic disasters, defeats and triumphs in their mining industry from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Illustrated by a stunning collection of drawings and photographs, some in colour. A very scarce book.
