Author began his career as a hand miner in England when he was thirteen and, after a few years of prairie farming, spent his working life in the industry, eventually becoming District Superintendant of the mines at Cumberland on Vancouver Island. In the intervening years he worked at nearly every phase of the coal mining process. This autobiography provides real insight into the life of the miner and how men worked in the mines.
