Oblong octavo. Leporello of 24 panels, numbered I-XXIV with a total of ca. 120 chromolithographs of uniformed figures. Last plate shows ranks and insignia. Original maroon stiff wrappers, chromolithograph title-plate mounted on cover, spine worn, two chipped corners, small repair to back cover. In a very good internal condition. ~ First edition. This extremely rare variant copy includes the text "Nach Original-Skizzen von E. R. Barteau" lithographed in blue on the cover plate. A splendid production. The beautiful plates are printed with rich, dense colours and excellent gloss. An authoritative manual on chromolithography in 1885 (Colour and Colour Printing, by W. D. Richmond) asserts the need for at least 9 separate stones to achieve such richness, but in fact the number of stones used was often more than 20. Colas 230 .

Hardcover, bound in the original half calf and pebbled cloth, spine decorated in gilt, floral endpaper; corners chafed, neatly restored, spine bit rubbed and cracked dry in places, equally neatly restored, inner hinges cracked; some sporadic foxing, particularly to tissue-guards due to inferior paper quality; plates are clean. In good binding and with a very good interior. ~ First edition.
