In the mind of every Turk there is a set image for Ottoman Sultans that he has acquired from a variety of sources: school books historical texts encyclopaedias etc. The Ottoman royal image is not altogether unknown to the Europeans either. This is due to the fact that there is a pictorial record of the Ottoman Sultans created by the numerous portraits produced through the centuries by Turkish and European artists. It was a great pleasure for me to write the explanatory text to this special album of sultan portraits in Inan and Suna Kirac collection. The absence of an original text in the album itself complicated the study of the portraits in view of their iconography especially the richly detailed backgrounds and attributes used for each sultan. This necessitated a thorough study of historical sources and a search for comparative albums. Nevertheless 17 similar albums dating from approximately the same period were recorded and listed after the text. The main question was to explore into the realm of the Ottoman artist to discover his approach to portraiture. In Islam to read a person's character through the study of his physiognomy has been a science. With this in mind did the Ottoman artist confine himself only to the preset details of each sultan's physiognomy or did he enrich his knowledge about the sultans through other sources I strongly believe that the artist of the Kirac album did this. Therefore in the short texts accompanying each portrait I chose to give a brief record of the sultan's deeds interests and personality as revealed in historical sources. In this way it would be easier to comprehend the artist's interpretation. In the main text I tried to give a comprehensive summary of the history of royal portraiture among the Ottomans and presented the prototypes to this album. Then came a discussion of the Kirac album itself not only in view of its artistic value but also as a significant source of information about imperial attire and certainly the artistic milieu of the Ottoman Empire in the first decades of the 19th century. <br/> <br/> Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi hardcover

Some curling else generally fine. Plus 140 lace sample cyanotypes measuring 4.75Â” x 3Â” approx. Generally very good. Plus 31 additional images in black-and-white: eight 15Â” x 12Â” approx. others various smaller sizes. With: faux-leather album measuring 13Â” x 11Â” approx. and titled Â“THE SCRANTON LACE COMPANY / Corner Glenn Street and Meylert AvenueÂ” on paper label to front cover. Interior marked Â“curtains/table coverings book no. 3.Â” Contains 273 images of various sizes cyanotype and gelatin silver mounted on black paper some captioned with names of product lines. Plus: two invoices for yarn and other textiles. Joints and edges worn several pages detached. Contents generally fine. <br/><br/>A sizable archive of over 1150 images from the Scranton Lace Company a major manufacturer that operated from 1890 to 2002 consisting of samples used in home decor Â— primarily window treatments and table linens -Â— likely photographed for internal purposes. Composed mainly of product sample photographs including images of intricate lace patterns against a dark background and with inventory numbers pinned to the sample. Several enlargements of full table cloths and settings also included with those mounted in the album cut Â— with striking effect Â— to create the illusion of a three-dimensional perspective. More than 200 of the images are cyanotypes which are notoriously fugitive to light and are here uncommonly well-preserved.Â The company was a leading producer of decorative lace throughout the 1900s. Notably the invoices and marginalia indicate at least some of these styles were made from Rayon which had only debuted commercially in the U.S. in 1924. Also noteworthy firm designer Hugh Rodham likely responsible for many of the patterns pictured here is the grandfather of Hillary Clinton. The bulk of the companyÂ’s extant archives are held by two regional museums: Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage and The Waverly Community House. A comprehensive representation of period lace styles ranging from traditional to contemporary and art-deco patterns all rendered in exquisite detail. We will note for purely self-serving reasons that two small lots of about 50 photos Â— both of a similar nature and from the same company Â— made more than $1000 each at the 2015 Swann vernacular photo auction. hardcover books
