Some light rubbing to top corners with some fraying and a bit of loss to spine head some trivial offsetting to the endpapers very clean and fresh otherwise with tight binding and crisp pages; white DJ with expected petina with moderate rubbing and a few short tears to the extremities and a very small enclosed tear to the front. Wood first came to literary notoriety for his poetic rendering of the surrender speech of Nez Perce Chief Joseph recordered in person while serving in the Oregon Indian Wars for the US Army. Writes Dee Brown 'Lieutenant Wood left the Army not long afterward to become a lawyer and an author of satirical poems and essays. His experiences with Chief Joseph and the Nez Perces influenced his later life; he became an ardent fighter for social justice and a defender of the dispossesed' Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. According to his publisher: 'Charles Erskine Scott Wood followed the tradition of his family and took up military life as a boy graduating from West Point Academy some fifty years ago. Still very young he served in the Indian campaigns of the Northwest fraternizing with the Indians learning of their wisdom and being accepted among them. Later Mr. Wood settled in Portland Oregon and there practised law becoming the most distinguished and picturesque attorney in the Northwest. Very good/ very good A tantalising as yet! unsupported association copy of the attractive limited edition George Bourne's familial farming memoir illustrated with six sympathetic woodcuts by Stephen Bone with an inscription ascribed to fellow woodcut artist author and suffragette Clemence Housman supposedly gifting it to the prolific and prolifically censored Irish novelist Norah Hoult: "To Norah from C. H. Christmas 1923"; according to a PO note "Alan Hancox the Cheltenham-based antiquarian bookseller who sold this to me says the inscription on the endpaper is by Clemence Housman. to Norah Hoult". Credibly in Housman's hand in 1923 the year of inscription the retiring artist and author would have been 62 and living briefly in Hampshire with her brother Laurence en route to their final home in Street from London; while her own novels and work for the Suffrage Atelier was behind her Housman was still producing wood engraving of her brother's drawings to illustrate his books with 1922 seeing Jonathan Cape issue three volumes of fairy stories and Christian fantasies on which the siblings collaborated. The significantly younger Hoult 1898–1984 had recently moved to London and was writing for a range of publications including Time and Tide the Telegraph and Pearson's Magazine; her first book Poor Women wouldn't appear for another five years. It's possible that Housman and Hoult may have met through literary circles and it seems likely that they would have been sympathetic to each other. Hoult would go on to nurture a close cross-generational friendship with her neighbour in wartime Kensington the novelist and suffragist Violet Hunt on whom she based her protagonist Claire in her 1944 novel of memory loss There Were No Windows. A distinguished Scottish artist Bone was nicknamed the "London Piranesi" for his ability to depict vast and complex construction sites cathedrals and shipyards. On the outbreak of the World War the War Propaganda Bureau recruited him in May 1916 as Britain's first official war artist. After completing a series of drawings on the Western Front including the Battle of the Somme Bone returned to London to document the war effort. A fine example from his World War I scenes of shipbuilding yards. unknown
190418971904. Drypoint printed in brownish black ink on fibrous laid Japon paper 3 3/8 x 6 5/16 inches 85 x 161 mm full margins. Signed in pencil lower right. Light age tone and minor cockling. A lovely impression of this rare image with excellent burr. During the First World War the British War Propaganda Bureau appointed Bone as the first official British war artist in May 1916. Bone had lobbied hard for the establishment of an Official War Artists scheme and in June 1916 he was sent to France with an honorary rank and a salary. Although thirty-eight years old at the outbreak of war Bone was spared from certain enlistment by his appointment. Bone's small black and white images and their realistic intensity reproduced well in the government-funded publications of the day. Where some artists might have demurred at the challenge of drawing ocean liners in a drydock or tens of thousands of shells in a munitions factory Bone delighted in them; he was rarely intimidated by complex subjects and whatever the challenge those who commissioned his work could always be sure that out of superficial chaos there emerged a beautiful and ordered design. <br /> <br /> Commissioned as an honorary second lieutenant Bone served as a war artist with the Allied forces on the Western Front and also with the Royal Navy for a time. He arrived in France on 16 August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and produced 150 drawings of the war before returning to England in October 1916. Over the next few months Bone returned to his earlier subject matter producing six lithographs of shipyards on the Clyde for the War Propaganda Bureau's Britain's Efforts and Ideals portfolio of images which were exhibited in Britain and abroad and were also sold as prints to raise money for the war effort. unknown

This memoir recounts the activities of the Merchant Navy during the First World War and was written by one of its most experienced captains. This volume was a collaboration between David Bone 1874-1959 and his brother Muirhead 1876-1953. Muirhead was an etcher and watercolourist who was appointed as the first official war artist in 1916. "He was among the greatest British draughtsmen and his images of cities particularly buildings being built or demolished display extraordinary technical skill" ODNB. This limited edition contains a signed etching by Muirhead titled Salvage Men Approaching a Torpedoed Ship. "Written largely between the shipping crisis of 1917 and the surrender of German undersea arms at Harwich on November 20 1918 this book is an effort to record a seaman's impressions of the trial through which the Merchants' Service has come in the war" p. xi. David Bone 1874-1959 first joined the Merchant Navy at age 15 in 1889. He served during the Boer War captained many ships including the 17000-ton liner Transylvania and fought in both world wars. He told a reporter in 1943 that he had served in so many convoys even he could not remember the total. He also was a celebrated writer releasing his first novel The Brassbounder in 1910. Quarto.
